Twitch Introduces Face Scan Age Verification for Users

Twitch has introduced a new age verification protocol that requires users to scan their faces as part of an initiative aimed at enhancing community safety. This update, effective from September 15, mandates users signing up to comply with local regulations that necessitate facial scans for age estimation.

While the Amazon-owned platform continues to restrict account creation to individuals aged 13 and above, the introduction of facial scanning presents an additional hurdle for users aiming to access content upon logging in.

Why Implement Age Verification Scans?

The UK has recently implemented stricter measures concerning age verification for accessing mature content online. This new policy requires users to complete a facial scan to confirm they are over 18, a decision that has already sparked significant criticism due to its cumbersome execution and potential privacy risks.

Public reception has been decidedly mixed, with many UK residents expressing dissatisfaction over the inconvenience of needing to use facial recognition every time they wish to access age-restricted content on the internet.

Upon signing in to Twitch, users will navigate to a “Verify Your Age”screen. In this step, individuals are required to remove any glasses or headgear and scan their face to verify their age, thus gaining access to the platform. This age verification is also crucial for viewing specific content, including mature-rated games.

Twitch reassures users of their privacy, stating, “To protect your privacy, Twitch and k-ID (a third-party vendor we partner with to verify your age) do not store your face scan video selfies. The video selfie used for facial age estimation is analyzed entirely on your device and will never leave it, ” emphasizing that the data collected is solely for the purpose of age verification.

Despite these assurances, many Twitch users have voiced their objections. Some have apparently joked about the dystopian implications of such a requirement, while others have considered quitting the platform altogether due to the new regulations.

Interestingly, some users have devised ways to bypass this facial recognition system. For instance, in a humorous display of rebellion, a few managed to use Norman Reedus’ face from the video game Death Stranding to trick the facial scanners.

However, others have not had the same luck with the technology; a well-known tattooed individual in Britain faced issues accessing websites as the system misidentified his heavily tattooed face as a mask.
