Beomgyu of TXT Raises Concerns Over KakaoTalk’s Redesign
On September 28, Beomgyu (Choi Beom-gyu), a member of the popular K-pop group TXT, shared his frustrations regarding the recent redesign of KakaoTalk on the fan platform Weverse. He voiced his dissatisfaction with both the abrupt nature of the changes and the new user interface introduced in the app. His remarks were initially reported by Nate.
“Why does the KakaoTalk update just change by itself?” he wrote.“I hate when anything changes suddenly. I truly dislike this update — I don’t know if it’s okay to say, but it’s really bad.”
Beomgyu further suggested a rollback feature: “If you’re going to update automatically, at least make a function that allows going back to the previous version. I already like analog stuff, and when so much changes all at once, it’s really overwhelming.”

Beomgyu recognized that updates are typically meant to enhance user experience but contended that this particular version complicates navigation. He specifically criticized the new gallery-style display for user profiles, contending it lacks utility and questioning its purpose: “Who does this update serve?” Despite his criticisms, he rounded off his comments on a more positive note:
“Even so, I think it’s admirable that you (the developers) keep creating new things and updating for the users. Thank you always.”
User Reactions and Context of Discontent
Beomgyu’s sentiments reflect a broader wave of dissatisfaction among KakaoTalk users. Following a major update on September 23, which marked the first redesign in 15 years, users were introduced to a feed-style format for their friends list and more prominently displayed individual profiles. Additionally, a new short-form video tab was added, pushing the app further into the social media landscape.

A substantial number of users have publicly expressed their dissatisfaction with the redesign:
- Some users reported feelings of embarrassment due to old photos being resurfaced.
- Others have lamented the unsolicited view of profiles they are indifferent towards.
- A noteworthy portion of users resorted to giving 1-star reviews on app stores, calling for a return to the previous design.
In response to the backlash, a representative from Kakao acknowledged that the company is “listening to user feedback” and is committed to improving functionality. However, they have yet to confirm whether a full reversion to the previous interface will occur.
