UK School Sends Teddy Bear to Space: Help Needed to Locate It on Earth

Students from a private school in England are on a mission to locate a teddy bear that unexpectedly returned to Earth after a thrilling journey into the stratosphere. The beloved toy, known as Bradford Bear, belongs to Walhampton School in Hampshire and was launched into the upper atmosphere as part of an educational initiative in collaboration with the Southampton University Spaceflight Society.

The seventh- and eighth-grade students equipped a weather balloon with a camera and parachute system before its release from Lymington. As captured in the footage, Bradford Bear ascended to an impressive altitude of approximately 16.7 miles above the Earth’s surface. However, during the flight, the bear was dislodged from its harness, leading to a rapid descent back to the ground.

According to a report by UPI, Bradford was predicted to parachute down gently alongside the other equipment in the Basingstoke area. Unfortunately, the teddy bear has not been found, and teachers suspect it may have landed somewhere between Earley and Fawley, leading to a community-wide search initiative.

Community Joins the Search for Bradford Bear

Walhampton School has launched a public appeal via Facebook, informing families and local residents of Bradford Bear’s disappearance nearly two weeks following its launch. The school’s post contains video footage of the bear’s final ascent, amplifying the urgency of their appeal.

In their post, the school characterized Bradford as “greatly missed” and indicated that they believe he may be located in the Henley-on-Thames area. The school has encouraged anyone with pertinent information to reach out, stating that video footage or specific location hints would be “hugely appreciated” as the search progresses.

“If you have any information regarding his whereabouts, no matter how small, please let us know, ” the school emphasized, highlighting the importance of community involvement in locating the wayward teddy bear.

Science teacher Ellie Robinson shared with the BBC that Bradford performed “amazingly” throughout his mission, reassuring students that the bear is “very brave and resourceful” while the search for him continues unabated.
