Keanu Reeves has earned a reputation as one of the kindest figures in Hollywood. Recent revelations highlight his commitment to safeguarding his fans from romance scammers by investing thousands of dollars each month to eliminate fake profiles impersonating him online.
While romance scams have long been a concern, their prevalence is increasing, particularly due to advancements in AI and deepfake technology. In just the past year, reports have surfaced about multiple victims falling prey to these scams. For instance, one woman lost an astounding $850, 000 to a scammer masquerading as Brad Pitt, while Martin Henderson from ‘Virgin River’ faced impersonation issues on Facebook. A Twitch streamer even found herself temporarily homeless after being deceived by a fake Pokimane account.
The Dedication of Keanu Reeves

According to an investigative piece by The Hollywood Reporter, Keanu Reeves is reportedly one of the most impersonated celebrities online, partly due to his limited social media presence and his universally liked character. Recognizing this challenge, he has been proactive in combatting the issue.
To address the impersonation problem, Reeves has engaged Loti, an AI company that focuses on safeguarding celebrities and public figures from online threats, including deepfakes. The report reveals that he spends “a few thousand dollars a month”to utilize their services to identify and shut down fake accounts on platforms like TikTok and Meta. Loti’s founder, data scientist Luke Arrigoni, affirmed Reeves’s dedication to protecting his fans.
“He truly cares about how his fans are treated and is notably invested in resolving this problem, ” Arrigoni stated, sharing that over the past year, the company has submitted nearly 40, 000 requests for account takedowns attributed to Reeves.
However, addressing only his impersonators isn’t enough. Rebecca Keegan from THR went undercover, pretending to be a potential victim, and was contacted by an account posing as Reeves’s publicist, Cheryl Maisel. When informed about the impersonations, the real Maisel expressed, “This is sad, ” indicating the seriousness of the issue. Reeves also utilizes Loti’s services to combat impersonators targeting his close circle.

During her investigation, Keegan discovered numerous fabricated images of Reeves, noting that many were altered versions of a single photo from a 2017 motorcycle event in Italy. Despite Reeves’s substantial efforts to shield his fans, the broader implications of AI and deepfake technology concerning deception are alarming the entertainment industry.
Erin West, a former prosecutor specializing in technology-related crimes, expressed that the individuals behind these scams are highly skilled. She stated, “The psychological hold they have over people is like nothing I’ve ever seen. It is cult-like, overwhelming any form of reasonable judgment. They manage to obscure what would otherwise seem like an obviously absurd situation.”
Furthermore, Alexandra Shannon, who leads strategic development at CAA, emphasized, “There is a growing awareness and concern regarding the increasing use of AI-generated content featuring celebrities. We believe that regulatory measures need to be established for everyone’s protection.”
