Umbrella Academy Season 4: Explaining the Ending and the Fate of Characters

The notorious and dysfunctional family from the multiverse is making a comeback to save the world once more in Season 4 of The Umbrella Academy – and this will be their final mission.

As the final season of Umbrella Academy draws to a close, Season 4 features six episodes that include several prominent deaths, concluding this epic tale of superpowers.

The Hargreeves siblings are once again thrust into a multiverse where they must face the catastrophic consequences of their actions. However, this time, they are forced to make the difficult decision of either saving millions of lives or sacrificing one of their own siblings.

Despite facing shocking losses, including those whose fate was sealed as early as Episode 1, we will now breakdown all the characters we said goodbye to in the final season of Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy. Warning: spoilers ahead!

Explaining the ending of The Umbrella Academy Season 4

The fourth season concludes with the Hargreeves family making a significant sacrifice in order to restore balance to the multiverse.

The Hargreeves embark on a mission to save the life of their brother, Ben, in the fourth season, after discovering that he was the catalyst for the apocalypse in this multiverse.

Despite being a major character in both previous seasons and the source material comics, Ben’s death has remained a well-kept secret. The only semblance of information provided to fans were ambiguous accounts from his siblings and a mysterious event known only as “The Jennifer Incident.”

In Episode 4, it is revealed that in the original Season 1 timeline, Ben was killed by his father, Reginald, in order to prevent him from forming a connection with Jennifer, a young girl who was discovered washed ashore in a small town inside a massive squid.

Despite not remembering the events that occurred to her, Jennifer and Ben were consistently drawn to each other in every iteration of the multiverse due to their shared abilities.

The Hargreeves’ abilities were bestowed upon them by an alien substance called marigold, while Jennifer’s powers were derived from durango, which was the complete opposite of the particle source that the rest of the family obtained their abilities from.

Due to their opposing powers, it is inevitable that Ben and Jennifer will bring about the destruction of the world. The combination of marigold and durango creates a dangerous and unstoppable reaction, making them a catastrophic force when together.

After discovering this, the Hargreeves siblings locate Ben and Jennifer at an abandoned department store, where the effects of their opposing forces have already begun to manifest.

Despite their efforts to prevent the transformation of Ben and Jennifer into a colossal monster, the marigold and durango prove to be too formidable, causing the siblings to come to the realization that the end of the world was unavoidable.

Who dies in The Umbrella Academy Season 4?

In The Umbrella Academy Season 4, Jean and Gene Thibedeau, along with the Hargreeves siblings, meet their demise. In other words, the entire group perishes.

Jean and Gene are the leaders of The Umbrella Effect movement, a group of individuals who share the belief that they are residing in the incorrect timeline.

By collecting artifacts from previous seasons, such as a movie featuring Alison Hargreeves and toy statues of the original Umbrella Academy, they were able to provide evidence for the existence of the multiverse theory.

The couple utilized their resources to facilitate a meeting between Ben and Jennifer, convinced that their union would lead to “The Cleanse”or a complete reset of the timelines, resulting in the return of everyone to their respective homes.

Sadly, the pursuit of their dream ultimately leads to the demise of both Jean and Gene. Gene meets his end at the hands of Reginald’s wife, Abigail, who cleverly disguises her alien identity by wearing the skin of an Umbrella Effect member.

Upon taking on Gene’s appearance, Abigail proceeds to murder Jean due to her growing suspicion of Gene’s increasingly unstable actions.

As Abigail and the other members of the Umbrella Effect confront Ben and Jennifer’s catastrophic end of the world in this alternate version of the multiverse, Five Hargreeves realizes that there is only one solution to prevent all of the apocalypses: the family must no longer exist.

The Hargreeves siblings’ mere existence means that marigold and durango were never meant to be created, resulting in the world’s destruction continuing for eternity through new branches of time.

Five informs the gang that merging with Ben and Jennifer is necessary to nullify their powers and restore the original timeline, the same one we witnessed in Season 1.

The Hargreeves family, in one last act of super heroism, sacrifice themselves once again, effectively eradicating all parallel universes and bringing about peace in a singular timeline for the world to thrive in.

The first four seasons of The Umbrella Academy are currently available for streaming. Additionally, there are other TV shows you can watch in August.
