The eagerly anticipated Stranger Things documentary is set to premiere on Netflix ahead of the fifth and final season, but it will focus on the theatrical production rather than the series itself.
Fans have been eagerly awaiting updates on Season 5 of this beloved Netflix sci-fi series, which made its debut nearly ten years ago in 2016. While the release date for the upcoming season remains unannounced, speculation suggests that viewers should prepare for significant character losses and emotionally charged moments.
Since the inaugural season, the franchise has expanded to four seasons and a successful stage play, the latter of which is soon to be featured in its own documentary.
Insights into the Production: ‘Stranger Things: The First Shadow’ Documentary Set for April
For fans still getting acquainted with the lore, Stranger Things: The First Shadow debuted in London’s West End in 2023. This prequel set in 1959 explores the story of the Creel family’s arrival in Hawkins, while also introducing younger versions of familiar characters like Hopper and Joyce.
The play was well-received, paving the way for a Broadway showing on April 22. However, Netflix will release the corresponding documentary on April 15, capturing the journey of the play from concept to stage.
“The first time we saw the play, we were blown away, ” commented Ross Duffer, while his brother Matt Duffer echoed this sentiment, exclaiming, “They pulled everything off and then some. It was one of the most thrilling experiences of our lives.”
This documentary will delve into the behind-the-scenes efforts leading up to the play’s opening night, which occurred on December 14, 2023. Audiences can expect an in-depth exploration of the creative process, featuring elaborate set designs and remarkable special effects.
Director Stephen Daldry emphasizes the importance of crafting an immersive experience, stating, “The challenge is to create a visceral experience for the audience, where they feel shock and awe, surprise and delight. You have to deliver that.” He added, “The fusion of television and theater is about the speed of the narrative and how you create it… There are moments in the show where you will think, ‘I don’t understand how they did that.’”
Mark your calendars: Behind the Curtain: Stranger Things: The First Shadow will be available for streaming on Netflix starting April 15.
