Understanding the ‘Aura’ Trend: TikTok Users Assess Their Own Cool Factor

TikTok’s latest craze, known as the ‘aura’ trend, involves users assigning themselves hypothetical aura points that fluctuate based on their daily experiences and accomplishments.

While it can be jarring when others label you as ‘uncool,’ the ‘aura’ trend takes it a step further by prompting users to assess their own aura points, often revealing some unexpected self-critique.

Though it may seem like harmless fun, the core of the ‘aura’ trend is rather straightforward: TikTok users assess their success or failures by assigning themselves points, either positively or negatively.

For example, if a user strolls around with an unzipped backpack when it should be closed, they might lose 600 points. Conversely, if they attempt to hold a door open but someone bypasses them for the next door, that could also lead to a point loss.

On the flip side, scoring points is easy if a user successfully shoots a basketball into the hoop or is the only person in class to have their hand raised and get called on by the teacher.

What exactly is an aura?

So, what is an aura? According to Healthline, an aura refers to an energetic field surrounding the body, a concept rooted in the mystical, which can be interpreted through the colors radiating from one’s energy field.

Each aura color conveys a distinct trait; for instance, a yellow aura might indicate creativity, optimism, and friendliness, while an indigo aura suggests intuition, spirituality, and wisdom.

Although the idea of an aura has been around for centuries, TikTok’s ‘aura’ trend began gaining traction in May, particularly among school-aged users. A viral video by ‘securethabag.mel’ showcases a “day in the life of aura.”

Users tallying their “aura points”

As users engage with the trend, they calculate their aura points based on the events of their day. In one instance, a TikToker subtracted 6,000 points after accidentally sitting on a wet bench.

Responses from viewers include sharing personal anecdotes about their hypothetical aura milestones. One user shared, “I lost 3,000 aura today because my sweatshirt got caught on the fence and yanked me back,” while another noted, “Gained 500 aura today for reaching the top of the doorframe.”

TikToker ‘030lesly’ contributed to the trend by noting their experience at the gym, where a barbell accidentally hit them in the head, resulting in a deduction of 600 aura points. They also docked themselves 1,000 points after tripping on a protruding metal piece.

Other users have shared their own criteria for scoring their aura points at the gym; for instance, “AirPods fall out mid-set -5000 aura,” and “Leaving the gym just as your crush walks in -100000 aura.”

Despite the made-up nature of these aura point assessments, the trend has quickly spiraled, resulting in over 107 million ‘aura’ posts on TikTok.
