The ending of The Deliverance has been fully explained, as the faith-based horror movie has finally arrived on Netflix. However, audiences are left wondering what awaits them in the basement.
In 2024, we have been bombarded with a slew of horror movies, ranging from In A Violent Nature and Longlegs to highly anticipated releases such as Terrifier 3.
Netflix is also ensuring its involvement in the action by releasing The Deliverance on its streaming platform. This film combines elements of horror and religious faith.
Featuring a star-studded lineup consisting of Andra Day, Mo’Nique, Caleb McLaughlin, and a never-before-seen side of Glenn Close, The Deliverance’s ending is a must-see. Caution: spoilers ahead!
Ebony’s Family Struggles
The Deliverance opens by acquainting us with a family facing numerous challenges. Single mother Ebony (Audra Day) is shouldering all responsibilities while her children’s father remains absent, and there is a suggestion that she has a criminal history.
Nate (Caleb McLaughlin), the eldest of her children, does his utmost to take care of his two younger siblings, Shante (Demi Singleton) and Andre (Anthony B. Jenkins).
Despite the added tension at home, Ebony has received support from her mother Berta (played by Glenn Close), who has moved in to assist her daughter. Ebony has also sought refuge in the church following a challenging upbringing.
It is evident that there are tensions among all five of them, as Ebony runs a tight household and does not welcome any criticism from the others.
Despite her efforts, Ebony’s children are still struggling at school due to constant threats from neighborhood kids. In response, Ebony fights back, causing Shante to worry that her mother will end up back in prison.
Despite Andre’s constant self-talk, Ebony restricts him from doing so. She appears disconnected from her children and also restricts their independence.
At this point, significant context is provided. Ebony consistently faces challenges in making basic payments due to a lack of funds.
Ebony’s children’s father is currently serving abroad and is not in contact with her. Berta, who is undergoing chemotherapy, has been receiving financial support from Ebony for the past year in secret. Additionally, all of the children have unexplained bruises and memory lapses, causing many outsiders to suspect that Ebony is mistreating them.
Despite indications that Ebony had struggled with a severe drinking problem in the past, it is challenging to determine the veracity of her experiences. As chaos ensues and social services draw near, the basement of the house begins to make its presence felt.
Despite constant flies and an often-open door, Ebony always switches on the light when she suspects an intruder has entered the house. Andre, on the other hand, is frequently drawn to the basement and regularly discovers deceased animals both inside and outside.
Cynthia isn’t having any of it
When Ebony faces financial difficulties in The Deliverance, Nate discloses that their father has been sending him money to assist in her departure from their home. This causes a dispute between the siblings, and Andre attempts to step in, resulting in him getting hurt.
The following day, Nate settles the bill with the pest control company to have a deceased feline removed from their basement, coinciding with the arrival of Cynthia (Mo’Nique), a social services agent, at their front door.
It was disclosed that the children’s father had previously filed legal complaints against Ebony, claiming that her household was abusive.
Despite what viewers on the streaming service might believe, Ebony insists that she does not physically harm her children. She contends that her ex-partner has falsely accused her of this in order to gain full custody of their children, even though she has never intentionally caused them to bleed.
Cynthia refuses to accept the situation. She informs Ebony that the nearby school has been expressing concerns about the children’s increasingly unpredictable behavior. Furthermore, all three of them are unable to provide an explanation for the bruises on their bodies.
She insists that Ebony needs to straighten up and quit drinking, especially since an unidentified woman was spotted outside in a car taking photos.
On Shante’s birthday, it appeared that the family tension had been resolved. However, this was short-lived as Andre was discovered in the basement, claiming that his imaginary friend “Trey”had told him to go down there. Later at the party, he was found standing alone in a corner, facing the wall.
Despite having had too much to drink, Ebony still manages to put him back to sleep. However, when she mistakenly believes that Andre has gotten up for the third time, she storms into his room. Berta eventually discovers all three children cowering in fear in the corner, while Ebony stands dazed in the center of the room.
After Andre claimed that Ebony had the children pinned against the wall, Berta became even more convinced that she was hitting them.
At school, strange events occur for each of them – Nate can’t contain his laughter during a lesson on the AIDS crisis, Shante experiences unexpected bleeding, and Andre even throws his feces at the teacher in the middle of class.
Ebony receives a call at work informing her that all three individuals have been hospitalized. However, the nurses assure her that tests have shown no signs of illness. Despite their reassurances, Ebony becomes increasingly convinced that there is a larger issue at hand. She attempts to convince Cynthia of this during her next visit.
After listening to the nurses’ comments about the children’s condition, Cynthia opens up about the loss of her own child in an accident many years ago. She confides in Ebony that her disregard for her own children makes her feel nauseous. Both Cynthia and Berta urge Ebony to get her priorities in order.
The house’s history catches up with the kids
The most recent film begins with Ebony exiting a bar and being approached by the woman who she had previously seen taking pictures of her. Ebony quickly dismisses her as Cynthia’s underling, but the woman reveals that she is aware of the events occurring at the house.
Bernice (Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor) is a Reverend who believes that Jesus has tasked her with aiding Ebony due to the house’s past. According to Bernice, it is not solely the basement that is responsible for the disturbances – the entire property is plagued by demonic spirits.
She informs Ebony of the previous inhabitants of this place. Just like her own children, their kids were often caught behaving oddly, but no medical professional could ever diagnose them with any issues. Gradually, this problem spread amongst each member of the family, resulting in them turning on each other.
After the mother killed them all, she hanged herself. This is supposedly the reason for the foul smell in the house and the abundance of flies. Ebony finds the explanation absurd and decides to leave. However, Bernice insists on taking her contact information, saying she might need it later.
Berta attempts to discuss her concerns with authorities, but they dismiss her and deny the possibility of such events occurring. At home, the children’s behavior starts to change. Nate first tries to drown Andre in a bathtub and then turns on Berta, attacking her in the living room and ultimately causing her death.
Upon arrival, Ebony discovers the chaos and quickly packs up the kids in the car before driving away just as the emergency services arrive. As they make their escape, Andre’s eyes darken and he begins to blame Ebony for her mother’s death, resembling a demon in his fury.
Despite nearly crashing the car, she frantically runs to a nearby vehicle in search of help. However, when strangers open the car door, the children are filled with fear, ultimately resulting in Ebony being admitted for psychiatric treatment and the children being hospitalized.
Nurses at the hospital inform Cynthia that Andre is vomiting colored liquid and speaking in tongues. Upon witnessing his condition, she is able to persuade the police to show leniency towards Ebony, who promptly departs to seek assistance from Bernice.
Cynthia witnesses Andre’s transformation in the hospital room, as he breaks free from restraints and climbs walls in a style reminiscent of The Exorcist. Despite her attempts to inform the doctors, it proves to be too late as Andre has already disappeared.
The Deliverance Finale: A Basement Showdown
In the Deliverance ending, it is revealed that Ebony has brought Andre back to her home from the hospital, where Bernice will perform the deliverance on the demon. Bernice straps Andre to a chair and reminds Ebony to tap into the faith she once had before the traumatic events from her childhood.
As the ritual begins, the demon takes on the form of Berta. Despite attempts to drive it away with holy water, the entity continues to wreak havoc throughout the house.
In addition to witnessing Glenn Close’s unexpected revelations, the scene also features a traditional exorcism taking place. The rest of the children, who are now attending a convent school, also endure physical distress during the event.
Shortly after, the demon transforms back into Andre, which causes Bernice to completely lose control. Andre is able to subdue her and ultimately ends her life. However, before she breathes her last words, Bernice warns Ebony that she has delved too deep into this dangerous situation. To complete the task at hand, Ebony must rely on faith, holy water, and her own strength.
Finally returning to the basement, Ebony confronts demon Andre for their ultimate showdown. The demon attempts to deceive her by pretending to release Andre and exploiting her vulnerabilities, insinuating that she is unloved. It escalates to the point where the demon transforms into an imitation of Ebony, blaming her for all their troubles.
Even with her eyes closed, Ebony recalls Berta’s words about being able to turn to God when she doesn’t want to speak to her mother. As she steps into the sliver of light, Ebony follows through with this advice and successfully banishes the demon, engulfing it in flames.
As the sun rises, everything seems to be fine, except for Andre who is slumped over in a corner. Nate and Shante also appear to have been spared from the curse.
Upon returning a few days later, Cynthia discovers Ebony, who is heavily scarred, packing up her belongings to relocate. Due to the courts taking away her children, Ebony has decided to move in with her aunt in Philadelphia in order to get her life back on track. She shares with Cynthia that she believes that with the Lord’s help, she will one day be reunited with her children.
Titles reveals that six months have passed and cuts to a scene of Ebony and her three kids on their way to their new home. While they are en route, Ebony shares that she has been in contact with their father and they have decided to give their relationship another chance.
