Unlocking Chef in Risk of Rain 2: A Guide to Obtaining this Powerful Character

The recently released Seekers of the Storm DLC for Risk of Rain 2 includes a variety of new characters to unlock, one of which is the Chef. This character wields sharp meat cleavers and has made a grand return. To add the Chef to your roster, follow our helpful guide on how to unlock this character in Risk of Rain 2.

Chef, one of the most beloved characters in the series, has been added to the already impressive roster of Risk of Rain 2, along with two other new characters. This brings the total number of characters in the game to three.

Unlocking and Playing as Chef in Risk of Rain 2

In order to obtain Chef as a playable character in Risk of Rain 2, you must first acquire three specific items. These items are the Cautious Slug (Common), the Bison Steak (Common), and an Infusion (Uncommon). To make obtaining these items easier, we suggest equipping the Artifact of Command. This will significantly increase your chances of obtaining the necessary items.

Just to reiterate, the Artifact of Command transforms all items into Command Essences, giving you the ability to manually choose a specific item that you have already unlocked instead of it being randomly obtained.

Additionally, it is important to note that your progress towards unlocking Chef will persist across multiple attempts, in case you encounter challenges in obtaining all three items consecutively.

To proceed in Stage One, you must acquire the three necessary items and locate a Halcyon Shrine. If the current stage does not have one, restart until you come across one. After finding the shrine, you must offer it gold (at least 200 pieces) while defeating nearby enemies.

If the shrine accumulates sufficient gold, a unique mini-boss will emerge that must be defeated. After defeating the mini-boss, there is a possibility for a green portal to materialize which you can use to advance. In case it does not appear, you will have to repeat the procedure until it does.

Upon entering this portal, you will find yourself in a unique location known as the Reformed Altar. Run across the area until you come across a massive staircase leading to a platform with pillars. Instead of going up the stairs, head to the left side where you will find a cave entrance nearby. Inside, you will discover a small altar area with a wok pot and a display where you can place the three aforementioned items. As an added bonus, you may catch a glimpse of Chef cooking in the background.

After completing the task, the items will be added to the wok pot and Chef will be permanently unlocked for your game from now on. You will also earn the ‘Order Up!’ achievement. To play as Chef, start a new run and choose them from the character menu.

The moveset of Chef is widely regarded as one of the most efficient and dependable among all playable characters. It consists of:

  • The passive ability “Chef’s Kiss”allows players to cook up and drop a healing food item by killing enemies with 2 or more skills.
  • The primary skill, Dice, allows you to throw a cleaver at enemies, dealing 250% damage. By using the skill again, you can recall the cleaver and cause 375% damage on its return journey.
  • The Sear ability (Secondary) deals 600% damage to nearby enemies and also inflicts Burn. Glazed enemies will receive an additional 75% damage.
  • Roll (Utility) – Activate this ability to quickly roll forward with your rolling pin, dealing 500-800% damage and Stunning any enemies that come into contact with you.
  • The Glaze ability (Special) allows the player to launch multiple oil globs rapidly, inflicting 7 times 200 damage and causing Slowing and Weakening effects on enemies.
  • The special ability, Yes, Chef!, enhances Chef’s regular abilities, making them more powerful and altering their properties.
