Players can now acquire the Master Ball in Pokemon Go, but to claim it, they’ll need to complete a Research task.
In May 2023, Niantic introduced the legendary Master Ball to Pokemon Go, providing players with a single guaranteed catch for any Pokemon they encounter.
This update is particularly beneficial for those who have recently defeated their favorite Legendary Pokemon or found the elusive Galarian Legendary Birds, as it eliminates the risk of them fleeing.

How to Obtain the Master Ball
The Master Ball is available exclusively during specific events in Pokemon Go and requires players to finish a Research questline.
The Masterwork Research, allowing players to secure a Master Ball, will be available from October 4 through October 11 as part of the Galarian Expedition event. It will be priced at $7.99 (or the equivalent in your local currency) and grant players the following rewards upon task completion:
- One Master Ball
- 18,000 XP
- 10,000 Stardust
- Encounters with event-themed Pokemon such as Galarian Farfetch’d and Galarian Mr. Mime
While Masterwork Research tasks often require a significant time investment, the quest does not expire, allowing players to complete it at their leisure.
How to Use the Master Ball
After acquiring the Master Ball, you can utilize it by selecting and throwing it just like any other Poke Ball. There’s no need to fret about missing your target, as it guarantees success regardless of where you throw it.
Upon throwing the Master Ball, a brief cutscene will play before the game resumes its standard catch animation.
Previous Master Ball Events
The Master Ball debuted on May 22, 2023, as part of the Rising Heroes season’s Let’s GO! Special Research. This research was available for free by logging into the game during that season, but since it concluded on June 1, 2023, players who missed it may not acquire one.
However, the Master Ball has made several returns through both free and paid events.
It became accessible again on September 1, 2023, with the launch of the Adventures Abound season and its Timed Investigation: Master Ball quest, which had to be completed by November 21, 2023.
Following that event, the Special Research: Master Ball was introduced as a paid questline priced at $7.99.
After this, the Master Ball returned during the Catching Wonders event through a complimentary Masterwork Research challenge, designed for completion over an extended period without a specified end date. Players needed to log in during the event, which ran from May 14, 2024, through May 19, 2024.
