Update KB5070773 Resolves USB Issues in WinRE for Windows 11 Versions 25H2 and 24H2

On October 20, 2025, Microsoft released the Out-of-Band update KB5066189 for Windows 11 to address a critical bug affecting the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).
This issue specifically hindered users’ ability to utilize USB devices, such as keyboards and mice, within the recovery environment.
The bug impacted systems running Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 24H2, along with Windows Server 2025.

To remedy the identified problems, Microsoft has issued the Out-of-Band update KB5070773, available in builds 26200.6901 for 25H2 and 26100.6901 for 24H2. This update specifically resolves the USB connectivity issues that arose in the Windows Recovery Environment, preventing users from using essential input devices during recovery tasks.

The source of this bug dates back to the security update KB5066835, which was rolled out on October 14, 2025. Microsoft confirmed that the recent OOB update rectifies the issue where “USB devices, such as keyboards and mice, do not function in the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), ” consequently blocking users from navigating through the recovery options.

It’s crucial to highlight that while USB devices were disabled in the recovery environment, they continued to function normally within the standard operating system interface. Following the deployment of the October Patch Tuesday updates, a limited number of users reported difficulties utilizing USB devices for navigation within the recovery environment.
