Valandil, a loyal lieutenant to Elendil and friend of Isildur, met his demise in the latest episode of *Rings of Power*. However, his death will not be in vain when considering Tolkien’s broader narrative.
In *Rings of Power*, Valandil displays courage and integrity. When he confronts Kemen, a character reminiscent of Joffrey from *Game of Thrones*, about disrespecting Queen Miriel in a tavern, he warns him that he’ll “suffer an infirmity” if he continues.
As tensions escalate in Season 2 Episode 5, Kemen crosses a line. After Elendil delivers a punch to Kemen, he orders the guards to restrain Elendil so he can retaliate. Valandil intervenes, catching Kemen’s hand and pushing him aside.
Isildur urges him to stop before the situation turns lethal, but Valandil’s act of mercy ends tragically as Kemen stabs him from behind. Yet, Valandil’s legacy will endure beyond this episode. **Book spoilers ahead…**
Elendil and Valandil: Future Kings
While Valandil is an original character for the series and not explicitly found in Tolkien’s works, his name resonates with deeper meaning, similar to how *The Stranger* has been referred to as a “grand elf.”
Elendil’s fate is crucial: in *The Silmarillion*, Pharâzon captures Sauron, who cunningly persuades him to venture to the Undying Lands of Valinor. In contrast, Elendil gathers his family and loyal followers, heading to Middle-earth.
Pharâzon’s defiance of the Ban of the Valar ultimately leads to the downfall of Númenor, which sinks into the sea. However, the Valar saves Elendil and his people, propelling them to Middle-earth with a mighty wind. From this point, they establish the kingdoms of Arnor and Gondor, with Elendil becoming the first High King.
Isildur may name his child after his brave friend Valandil.
In *Rings of Power*, Elendil struggles to accept Pharâzon’s rule over Númenor and aims to maintain composure amid chaos. Valandil’s untimely death will undoubtedly galvanize Elendil’s leadership when the moment calls for it.
Additionally, Valandil is also the name of Isildur’s fourth son, who was born towards the conclusion of the Second Age. Valandil ascends as heir at just 13, eventually reigning for an impressive 249 years after he becomes king at age 21.
The name Valandil means “lover of the Valar” in Quenya, likely inspiring Isildur’s son’s naming in Tolkien’s lore. In *Rings of Power*, Valandil deepens the connections shared between Elendil and Isildur.
To sum up, Elendil will honor Valandil’s bravery by adhering to Miriel’s wishes, and Isildur will likely pay homage to his best friend by naming one of his children after him.
