Valve Announces Steam Machine Pricing Comparable to PC While Ensuring a “Good Deal”

Valve recently announced that its upcoming Steam Machine will be priced comparably to standard PCs, emphasizing a “good deal”for potential customers amidst ongoing speculation about its cost.

On November 12, Valve unveiled three new hardware products: the Steam Machine, Steam Frame, and an upgraded version of the Steam Controller. These innovations are slated for release in 2026, though Valve has yet to disclose any pricing details.

Prominent tech YouTubers, including Linus Tech Tips, have voiced their opinions and concerns regarding the Steam Machine’s pricing strategy. Valve has confirmed that it will not adopt traditional console pricing models; rather, it will align itself with the pricing of comparable PC hardware.

Steam Machine: Targeting Competitive Pricing

During an appearance on the Friends Per Second podcast, Valve’s Pierre-Loup Griffais emphasized the company’s commitment to offering a system that represents great value when compared to similarly performing PCs. He noted that while the internal pricing framework is still subject to change due to current market conditions, the goal remains to provide competitive pricing that aligns with what users would invest in a custom-built PC.

“Ideally, we’d be pretty competitive with that and offer a solid deal, ” Griffais stated, acknowledging that the fluctuating costs of components present challenges in finalizing price points.

When asked if Valve plans to subsidize the Steam Machine to achieve lower, console-like price points, Griffais firmly stated that this is not the case.“No, it’s more in line with what you might expect from the current PC market, ” he clarified.

He also highlighted unique features, such as a compact design and low noise output, that deliver added value which is often hard to replicate in a typical DIY PC build.

By contrast, major gaming consoles such as PlayStation and Xbox usually launch at subsidized prices, although both companies raised their prices in 2025. Currently, PS5 models range between $500 and $550, while the PS5 Pro is priced at $750. The Xbox Series X starts around $600.
