Valve Clarifies Reasons for Steam Deck 2 Delay After Desktop Gaming PC Launch

On November 12, Valve introduced three exciting new hardware products, including the Steam Frame, a next-generation Steam Machine, and an updated Steam Controller. This announcement sparked curiosity among fans eagerly awaiting the future of the Steam Deck.

Recent statements from Valve confirmed that a next-generation Steam Deck is indeed on the horizon. However, the company is holding off on its release until new chip technologies are available that can significantly enhance performance without compromising battery life.

This insight was shared during an interview with IGN, where Pierre-Loup Griffais, a software engineer at Valve, discussed the company’s vision for the Steam Deck’s successor. He emphasized that Valve aims to launch a more powerful handheld device only when it can offer a substantial upgrade meaningful enough to warrant a new model.

Performance Goals for the Next Steam Deck

Griffais stated, “We’re not interested in getting to a point where it’s 20% or even 50% more performance at the same battery life.” He explained that the company is targeting something more transformative, which requires significant advancements in silicon and architecture. According to Griffais, Valve has a clear vision of what the next Steam Deck will be, but current market options do not meet their criteria for next-gen performance.

Since its launch in February 2022, followed by an OLED model released in November 2023, the Steam Deck has garnered a strong following. Despite its success and a vast library of Steam Deck-verified games, the current hardware struggles to keep pace with some of the latest PC titles.

Nevertheless, there’s plenty for Steam Deck enthusiasts to anticipate. Alongside the new Steam Frame headset and the revamped Steam Controller, these recent announcements illustrate Valve’s commitment to expanding its hardware offerings.
