In an unexpected twist of viral fame, a seemingly ordinary ballpoint pen has captured the internet’s attention. This is no ordinary writing instrument; it features living parasites within its transparent casing, making it a unique—if unconventional—collectible.
Originally developed in 2021, this peculiar piece of stationery hails from Japan. The concept raises the question: why settle for a mundane pen when you can hold a miniature ecosystem in your hand?
For those fortunate enough to visit Susaki City in Kochi Prefecture, this viral writing tool can be yours. Yes, you read that correctly—a transparent ballpoint pen containing live parasites is indeed available for purchase. If owning such a strange item intrigues you, you’re certainly not alone, though we might reserve a little judgment!
The Parasitic Pen Phenomenon
The brainchild of FUNA84, who reportedly extracted the Anisakis parasites from their own stomach, this pen showcases an unusual concept. Inspired by the online buzz surrounding the original creation, Takuhiro Tada, president of Tada Suisan, believed there was potential for wider distribution.

However, Tada Suisan takes a different approach than the original creator. They source the Anisakis parasites from fish rather than from human stomachs, which leads to variability in production volume.“Sometimes we manage to create around 20 pens in a single day; other times, we might not produce any at all for a week, ”Tada explained in an interview with Asahi News.
In light of the overwhelming online buzz, Tada Suisan has ramped up efforts to market these unusual pens. For anyone aspiring to embrace their inner villain or simply interested in owning one of the oddest novelties available, a trip to Kochi Prefecture may be in order.
