Walmart is embarking on an innovative journey by introducing a novel sushi bar concept within its grocery stores. This initiative is part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at enhancing the overall shopping experience in its supermarkets.
The latest Supercenter, launched in Jacksonville, Florida, serves as a blueprint for Walmart’s “next-generation”store design, which emphasizes an array of fresh food selections and modernized in-store features. The Jacksonville prototype will inform future remodels and refurbishments, indicating a significant shift in Walmart’s grocery offerings beyond the conventional grab-and-go items.
Walmart’s Sushi Bar Strategy Enhances Grocery Offerings
As part of this revamped store format, Walmart’s Supercenter presents a diverse range of grocery choices, including a revitalized bakery, deli, and, notably, a fresh sushi bar.
According to Walmart’s press release, “We are integrating interactive digital touchpoints to enhance in-store shopping, making it simpler, more efficient, and more connected. The expanded assortment will also highlight elevated fashion brands alongside robust grocery options, including our sushi bar.”
This strategic addition positions Walmart in direct competition with regional grocery chains that have built a solid reputation for their fresh prepared food offerings.

Industry expert John Clear, a partner at AlixPartners, commented to Grocery Dive, “One of the significant advantages that regional grocers have over large players like Walmart, Target, and Costco is their focus on fresh prepared foods. This allows them to prioritize quality over just competitive pricing.”
Previously, Walmart has offered grab-and-go sushi options through their Hissho on the Go program in the deli sections of select stores, particularly in the Charlotte area. Additionally, pre-packaged ready-to-eat sushi items are available under Walmart’s Marketside brand, both in-store and online.
Moreover, Walmart’s new grocery features also include hot food bars and dedicated grab-and-go sections that showcase items such as fresh chicken strips and rotisserie chicken.
To expand their reach further, sushi options have also been introduced at Sam’s Club locations under the Member’s Mark brand, extending Walmart’s sushi presence beyond the traditional grocery aisles.
