Kevin Rountree, the CEO of Games Workshop, has expressed the company’s stance on artificial intelligence, indicating that the creators of Warhammer are not in a hurry to embrace AI technology and have banned its application in specific contexts.
During the company’s semi-annual earnings report released on January 13, Rountree described the landscape of AI as “very broad” and acknowledged his limited expertise in the field. He noted that although a few senior managers have some familiarity with the technology, there is not substantial enthusiasm surrounding its adoption within the company.
Firm Policy Against AI in Warhammer Development
Rountree elaborated on an internal policy that Games Workshop has established in relation to AI, emphasizing a meticulous and cautious approach. This policy outright bans AI-generated content and prohibits the integration of AI in the design processes for Warhammer, as well as restricting unauthorized AI use outside the organization, which extends to all Games Workshop-sponsored competitions.
“We have agreed on an internal policy to guide us all, which is currently very cautious, e.g., we do not allow AI-generated content or AI to be used in our design processes or its unauthorized use outside of GW, including in any of our competitions.”

Notably, Rountree highlighted concerns beyond mere creative apprehension; he pointed out the importance of data compliance, security, and governance as critical areas needing oversight as AI technologies become more prevalent across devices such as phones and laptops. He stated that “whether we like it or not, ” these tools are becoming intricately embedded in various technologies.
While Games Workshop takes a cautious stance on AI, Rountree mentioned that a select group of senior managers is permitted to explore the technology without formal adoption. He reiterated the company’s robust commitment to safeguarding its intellectual property and honoring the contribution of human creators in the development of their products.
