James Gunn’s highly anticipated Superman film is set to debut in theaters soon, but viewers eager to watch it at home can rest assured it will land on a specific streaming platform before others.

Although it may not claim the title of the highest-grossing film of 2025, Superman is poised to be one of the year’s most significant releases, particularly in light of what it symbolizes for the franchise.

This marks the first major cinematic appearance of a new Superman since the release of 2012’s Man of Steel. With the previous DC Extended Universe (DCEU) officially concluded, this film signifies the start of a new era under the guidance of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe.

Riding a wave of positive feedback on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s expected that ticket sales will quickly soar. For those waiting to stream the film, patience will be required as it will exclusively release on one platform.

How to Watch Superman

Superman will debut in theaters globally on July 11. The film has been specially shot for IMAX, so while audiences can enjoy it in various formats, including 3D and 4DX, experiencing it on the largest screen possible is highly recommended.

As Gunn stated, “There’s something about Superman, this beautiful and colorful figure being able to fly… and to put that on film, it seemed like the perfect place to experience that would be IMAX.”

Initial projections suggest Superman could achieve over $200 million in its worldwide box office opening. Given that reviews have just emerged, ticket pre-sales may see a significant uptick as the weekend approaches.

Where to Stream Superman

Superman will ultimately be available for streaming on HBO Max, although an official date for its streaming release has yet to be announced.

Unlike some Warner Bros.productions, such as Red One, which debuted on Prime Video due to its collaboration with Amazon MGM, Superman is produced by DC Studios. Historical data suggests that most of the later DCEU films have transitioned to HBO Max following their theatrical runs. Given that HBO Max is also the home for Creature Commandos, Superman is assuredly headed there.

The timing of its streaming release will largely depend on its box office performance. For instance, the sequel to Godzilla x Kong took 97 days to transition to streaming, while Dune: Part Two arrived just 81 days post-release.

Conversely, Barbie waited a substantial 147 days to make its way onto Max, likely due to its status as the biggest blockbuster of 2023. Interestingly, the Minecraft Movie managed to stream in only 77 days after raking in over $900 million, potentially due to dwindling theatrical sales.

This summer promises to be vibrant at cinemas, with Superman facing stiff competition from Fantastic Four, which caused Fandango’s website to crash when tickets were released. As a result, Superman could be available for streaming as early as October or possibly later in the year.

Mark your calendars: Superman hits theaters on July 11.
