While Wayward is a fictional narrative, it draws inspiration from the true experiences of creator Mae Martin’s best friend, who spent time in a troubled teen facility. A “limited series”typically consists of a definable number of episodes and is designed to provide a complete story. However, success can often lead networks to rethink these boundaries. Shows like Big Little Lies and 13 Reasons Why began as limited series but ultimately expanded into multiple seasons due to audience demand.
With the ongoing popularity of Wayward, a second season seems more plausible, especially if viewership remains robust. Martin indicates that there are unresolved story arcs worth delving into.
In an interview with TV Insider, Martin remarked, “I was told it was a miniseries, but there’s definitely more story to tell. We left all those characters in crisis.”
Toni Collette shared her enthusiasm regarding a potential return, stating, “It’s endlessly intriguing. There are so many paths this story could take.”
Actors Alyvia Alyn Lind and Sydney Topliffe, who portray Leila and Abbie, also expressed their eagerness to return, with Lind stating, “Mae, if you’re listening, we’re here. We’re ready.”
With the series ending posing numerous questions, audiences are left wondering about the fates of the characters and the potential for new narratives.
Understanding the Conclusion of Wayward
The conclusion of the series presents a bittersweet outcome: Abbie successfully escapes from Tall Pines, but she is left alone. Meanwhile, Leila, Alex (Mae Martin), Laura (Sarah Gadon), and their newborn remain within the confines of the academy.
While Leila is on the brink of freedom, she chooses to stay at Tall Pines, conflicted about life outside the program and displaying strong ties to her indoctrination by Evelyn (Collette).
Throughout the series, Alex attempts to collaborate with Laura to extradite themselves from Tall Pines; however, he soon realizes that Laura has become entangled in Evelyn’s plans and aspires to succeed her as the new leader.
Evelyn’s deceptive methods have now been revealed: she utilizes psychedelic substances and psychologic manipulation to sever the bonds between the teens and their families, molding them into devoted followers.
In a gripping turn of events, Alex is almost compelled to undergo a similar procedure, but Rabbit (Tattiawna Jones), one of Tall Pines’ enforcers, turns against Evelyn at a critical moment. Alex seizes the opportunity to inject her with an excessive dose of the drug as Rabbit cautions that it might be excessive.
In a race against time, Alex rushes home to find Laura giving birth unexpectedly, with the residents of Tall Pines surrounding her.
Meanwhile, Abbie reaches the vehicle that Alex had arranged for her escape. Just as she prepares to leave, Alex appears, baby in arms, and they plan to build a new life together outside Tall Pines.
However, this hopeful narrative shatters: Alex is merely imagining this moment with Abbie while remaining at home, closing the door as Laura and their baby lie inside.
While Abbie indeed escapes, she does so in solitude.
This leaves the audience pondering vital questions: What will Abbie’s life entail following her escape? Is Laura poised to become the new Evelyn? Does Evelyn survive? Who will assume control over the academy? And what are the implications for Leila? Has Alex succumbed to their indoctrination?
Potential Directions for Wayward Season 2
These themes and questions could be explored further if Wayward receives a second season. Martin has indicated a desire to deepen the narratives of supporting characters, including Stacey (Isolde Ardies), who fell victim to Evelyn’s control, and Mule (Tricia Black), the enforcer learning French under Evelyn’s mentorship.
Moreover, Martin is keen on unearthing more of Duck’s (Joshua Close) backstory and hinted that Evelyn’s presence remains significant.“I think she’s still there, ” Martin noted, echoing Collette’s enthusiasm for returning to the role.
In a discussion with Variety, Martin briefly addressed Evelyn’s fate.“I don’t think so. I think she’s a vegetable, and I’d be curious to see if she could ever come out of it, ” she stated.
