Wednesday star Jenna Ortega reveals “disgusting” reason she quit Twitter

As you may have observed, Jenna Ortega had already deleted her Twitter/X account well before Wednesday even began, citing a “disgusting”motive for her decision.

Despite being a Hollywood A-Lister, the Wednesday star only uses social media occasionally. While she has been seen on Instagram, most notably promoting her appearance in Sabrina Carpenter’s ‘Taste’ music video, she has not been active on X/Twitter in years.

The news about her account deletion was only brought to attention in 2022. However, the reason behind it remained a mystery until now.

Ortega expressed to The New York Times in an interview (https://www.nytimes.com/2024/08/24/magazine/jenna-ortega-interview.html) that she never wanted to go back to the platform due to its “disgusting”utilization of AI.

“Although I have reservations about AI, I do recognize its potential for incredible advancements. For example, I recently read about how artificial intelligence was able to detect breast cancer four years earlier than usual, which is truly remarkable. However, I strongly believe that we should limit AI to such beneficial and life-saving uses.”

“Did I appreciate creating a Twitter account at 14 because it was expected of me and stumbling upon inappropriate, edited content of myself as a child? Absolutely not. It’s unethical and unjust.”

She added that the beginning was just a glimpse of what was to follow. She used to have a Twitter account and was advised to create one in order to enhance her image.

Ortega also mentioned that the account’s deletion before 2022 was due to a surge of nonsensical images and photos being shared.

“The content was distasteful and it left me with negative emotions. It also made me feel uneasy. That’s why I decided to remove it, as I couldn’t continue to be exposed to such things. One morning, I simply woke up and realized that I no longer wanted to have it in my life. Therefore, I got rid of it.”

Despite the ongoing issues of AI and deepfaking on the social networking site, a multitude of Ortega’s supporters have voiced their dissent towards the harm inflicted upon her.

One person questioned, “How is generative AI still legal?”on a comment thread, while another person chimed in with, “We are constantly provided with more and more justifications for banning AI.”

“A third person chimed in, stating that they wholeheartedly agreed with her and that there was no justification for that behavior.”

One fan summarized, “I understand her. This place is brutal, and they condone it.”

In her career, Ortega has faced multiple challenges besides Twitter. She reportedly departed from the production of Scream 7 following the firing of her co-star, Melissa Barrera, and her controversial film Miller’s Girl received backlash for its “f**ed up”age gap.

You can now stream Season 1 of Wednesday on Netflix. To stay updated on streaming service releases, be sure to read up on the latest news for Virgin River Season 6, Stranger Things Season 5, and Heartstopper Season 3.
