What is the Plot of Anna? Explanation of the Netflix Movie

Cillian Murphy stars in Anna, a KGB spy thriller that can now be streamed on Netflix. Here’s what you need to know.

Our preferred streaming services are not only vying for our focus with impressive new original programming, but they are also contending for the most valuable collection of previous content that money can acquire.

Every month, Netflix adds new titles to its library, while also removing others. Among the latest additions is the 2019 spy movie Anna.

However, what exactly does the enigmatic movie’s title allude to?

About Anna

Anna is a Russian woman who is employed by the KGB, but is seeking a way to leave her job.

The complete summary of the film states: “Anna Poliatova, a stunning Russian, is employed by the KGB but longs for a means of escape. When the CIA approaches her to become a double agent, she sees it as her chance to break free.”

Hidden beneath her stunning appearance lies a secret that will unleash her unwavering strength and expertise, ultimately propelling her to become one of the most feared assassins in the world.

Anna ultimately relocates to Paris in an attempt to escape from both the CIA and the local authorities, while also fulfilling a series of tasks throughout her journey.

This project, unlike other similarly titled Netflix projects such as Inventing Anna, is not based on a true story.

Starring Sasha Luss in the lead role, Anna also features Luke Evans, Cillian Murphy, Helen Mirren, and Alexander Petrov.

The complete list of actors is as follows:

  • Sasha Luss and Anna Poliatova
  • Helen Mirren as Olga
  • Luke Evans as Aleksander “Alex” Tchenkov

When the movie was first released, the Los Angeles Times reported that Anna was facing backlash amidst the #MeToo movement due to rape allegations made against writer and director Luc Besson. However, in 2019, the case against him was dropped due to lack of evidence and a subsequent investigation in 2021 was also dismissed.

Anna was also responsible for marking Sasha Luss’ debut role, as she had previously been a model.

Is Anna Worth Watching?

Despite having a 33% Tomatometer rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Anna’s audience score is an impressive 81%.

Adam Graham, a writer for Detroit News, reviewed the film “Anna”and noted that director Besson cleverly plays with the conventions of spy movies, incorporating elements of double crosses and triple crosses without venturing into parody. With a talented cast, Besson successfully pulls off this trick, making the film an entertaining watch.

Despite Benjamin Lee’s disagreement at The Guardian (https://www.theguardian.com/film/2019/jun/21/anna-review-sasha-luss-luc-besson-empty-assassin-thriller), he still believes that the film ultimately fails due to its lack of creativity in Anna’s kills and Besson’s inability to create a thrilling action scene.

According to David Ehrlich of IndieWire, the gunplay in Anna becomes monotonous and the protagonist’s indestructibility seems like a mere replacement for the control that Besson exerts over her.

Is Anna on Netflix worldwide?

Unfortunately, Anna is not available on Netflix in all countries. For example, viewers in the UK must use a VPN to access the film on the platform.
