Fans of strategy gaming can now dive into Civilization 7, which has officially launched on PC and consoles for those who pre-ordered the Deluxe or Founders Edition. While the initial reception has been a mix of praise and criticism, players and reviewers have expressed concerns regarding user interface (UI) challenges, balance issues, and overall game quality.
Despite these critiques, the PC version generally performs well. However, it does miss some standard features one might expect from a Firaxis title, most notably the absence of Steam Cloud support. This means that players will need to manually manage their local save files.
Where to Find Your Civilization 7 Save Files
| Platform | Save File Directory |
|---|---|
| Steam | C:\Users\[Your Windows Username]\Documents\My Games\Sid Meier’s Civilization VII\Saves\ |
| Epic Games Store | C:\Users\[Your Windows Username]\Documents\My Games\Sid Meier’s Civilization VII (Epic)\Saves\ |
As with previous entries in the Civilization franchise, it’s advisable to back up the entire Sid Meier’s Civilization VII folder for potential future use.
To access your save files quickly, you can use this shortcut in Windows Run (press Windows Key + R) or directly in File Explorer:
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization VII\Saves\
Resolving Save Issues in Civilization 7
If you’re struggling to save your progress in Civilization 7, it may be due to Windows’ “Controlled Folder Access” feature, which could be preventing the game from creating necessary save files. Here’s how to resolve this issue:
- Ensure that Civilization 7 is not running.
- Open Windows Search, type “Controlled folder access, ” and select the result.
- Click on “Allow an app through Controlled folder access” under the Controlled folder access section.

- Select the Add an allowed app button.
- Find and select the executable for Civilization 7 (Civ7_Win64_DX12_FinalRelease.exe) located here:
\Sid Meier's Civilization VII\Base\Binaries\Win64\
- If you can’t find it, check the “Block history” section as it may appear there.
After implementing these steps, the game should now be able to save your progress as intended.
Steam Cloud Support for Civilization 7
Currently, Civilization 7 does not support Steam Cloud. However, there is a possibility that this feature will be added after the early access phase concludes in the coming days. Until then, players must log into their 2K account to use cloud saves. Ensure you save your progress with crossplay enabled to access it across different platforms.
A 2K account is also beneficial for players as it facilitates crossplay and cross-progression among various platforms. While crossplay is supported on all platforms, please note that the Switch is restricted to multiplayer games on Tiny or Small maps. Fortunately, Civilization 7 also offers offline play, which does not require a constant internet connection or the 2K account if you prefer to forgo its extra features.
Now that you’ve configured your save files, discover how to tackle and prevent revolts in Civilization 7.
