Who is Luffy’s Mother in One Piece? The Craziest Theories That Might Come True

One Piece is known for its emphasis on dream, adventure, and friendship, which are fundamental themes in the series. Eiichiro Oda’s storytelling has gained global recognition, but what truly captivates fans are the carefully crafted mysteries and foreshadowing, as well as the hidden easter eggs scattered throughout the series.

It has become common for fans to even analyze the sodium levels in a drop of sweat, showcasing the extreme dedication and enthusiasm for a manga that has been followed for over twenty-five years. It is only natural to seek some form of recognition after such a long time invested in a series.

One of the biggest mysteries in the One Piece fandom is the true identity of Luffy’s mother. For devoted fans, the internet is filled with countless theories and discussions in forums and posts. However, for those who are not familiar, I will explore some of the most popular theories, including the possibility of Crocodile being Luffy’s mother or the idea that Luffy and Bonney share the same mother but have different fathers.

If you find that intriguing, let’s delve into these theories without delay.

1. The Crocomom Theory: Is Crocodile Luffy’s Mother?

Despite its absurdity, The Crocomom Theory proposes that Crocodile is actually Luffy’s birth mother. This raises the question: how is this possible given that he is the ruthless Warlord who nearly ended Luffy’s life in Alabasta?

Although it is true that there are certain events and encounters that suggest the former Warlord could possibly be Luffy’s mother, let’s delve into the details of these occurrences.

1.1. The Secret Between Crocodile & Ivankov

Ivankov possesses the Horu Hotu no Mi, also known as the Horm Horm Fruit, a Paramecia Type Devil Fruit that grants him the power to manipulate the human body using different hormones.

In the 540th chapter of One Piece, Luffy refuses Crocodile’s proposal to assist them in escaping Impel Down in return for his freedom. Ivankov, however, insists on bringing Crocodile along, revealing that the Warlord holds a secret that would no longer be confidential if he double-crosses them. Crocodile appears displeased by the ultimatum.

Emporio Ivankov’s introductory chapter further solidifies this theory.

After transforming a pirate into a woman, Ivankov reveals that the pirate’s father had also desired to be a woman and reassures her that having two mothers is not a problem. (One Piece Chapter 537)

The idea of two fathers, Dragon and Crocodile, and a son, Luffy, may seem like more than just a fan theory, don’t you think?

1.2 Mystery Surrounding Crocodile’s Gender

In case the aforementioned points do not interest you, there is additional evidence that supports the Crocomom theory.

In the One Shot titled One Piece Strong World (Volume 0), which depicts events 20 years before Luffy’s journey, viewers can see the execution of Roger and the faces of notable pirates such as Moria, Doflamingo, and Buggy, but not that of Crocodile.

In addition, the hairstyle, cigar, and earrings all align with the image of the female Crocodile Oda depicted in an SBS Volume.

It is believed that in One Piece Chapter 1086, the clone of Crocodile is the feminine-looking Seraphim on the far left beside Hancock’s. This Seraphim is among the other Seraphims.

In SBS Volume 63, Oda depicted the Warlords as children. In the artwork, Crocodile is portrayed as androgynous and tomboyish.

Therefore, it’s not only the fans who speculate that Crocodile is a woman, with no evidence to support their claims. Oda has strategically placed clues throughout the manga, special one-shots, and SBS volumes, solidifying the credibility of this theory.

Did Oda already reveal Luffy’s Mother?

Chapter 1057 of One Piece featured a special called “Where The Wind Blows,”which depicted Shanks and his crew at a Childcare meeting attempting to lull Uta to sleep. During the scene, a woman with an air of mystery sings a lullaby to her child, while Shanks and his crew dance along to the tune. Many speculate that the child is actually Luffy and the woman is his biological mother.

From watching One Piece Film: Red, it is evident that Uta and Luffy have been friends since childhood. Foosha Village, located in East Blue, is both Luffy’s hometown and a place where Shank often stays. By connecting these pieces of information, one can conclude that this theory is quite plausible.

Is Luffy’s Mother One of the Former Empresses of Amazon Lily?

During the events before the timeskip, Luffy and his crewmates were overwhelmed by Kizaru and Pacifistas and were on the brink of defeat. In this dire situation, Bartholomew Kuma came to their rescue by transporting each of them to a specific location where they could improve their individual abilities.

However, the one location that appears to be illogical is Amazon Lily. Upon examining the facts, it becomes clear that Bartholomew Kuma, an officer and co-founder of the Revolutionary Army, who was once a warlord, was instructed by the leader of the Revolutionary Army, Monkey D. Dragon, to send Luffy to Amazon Lily. This crucial detail should not be overlooked, especially considering that Dragon is Luffy’s father.

One could argue that Kuma deliberately sent him to Amazon Lily so that Rayleigh could teach Luffy the fundamentals of Haki without any interruptions. However, one might question why Amazon Lily was chosen instead of another, more isolated island.

It is possible that Luffy’s mother was one of the previous rulers of Amazon Lily. Gloriosa, one of the former Empresses, revealed that many of them were afflicted with lovesickness, resulting in some passing away and others, like Shakuyaku, fleeing to the outside world with their beloveds.

Among all the speculations, it is highly likely that Luffy’s mother was an Empress who fell in love with Dragon and chose to depart the island with him. This theory stands out as the most plausible explanation.

4. Is Ginny Luffy’s Mother? Are Bonney & Luffy Siblings?

In One Piece Chapter 1095, we are introduced to Bonney’s mother, Ginny, who is among the slaves working with Ivankov. What stood out to everyone was the striking resemblance between Ginny and Luffy in their ability to smile through tough situations and their shared love for meat, which they both carry with them at all times. And of course, their round eyes could not be overlooked.

However, suggesting that Ginny is the mother of Bonney with Kuma and Luffy with Dragon is highly improbable, especially since Oda has no plans to reveal Luffy’s mother in the story. It would be illogical for him to create such convoluted scenarios without any purpose.

5. Will Eiichiro Oda ever introduce Luffy’s mother?

In an SBS volume, Oda stated that he has no plans to include Luffy’s mother in his story of becoming the Pirate King. He explained that Luffy’s journey truly began when he left his mother’s side.

However, his next statement sparked controversy. He stated, “Mother is the antithesis of adventure.”Although this could be perceived in a negative light, it could also indicate that a mother always prioritizes the safety and well-being of her child, no matter the situation or age.

In the end, the decision to reveal the true identity of Luffy’s mother or continue to let us, as One Piece fans, speculate with our outlandish theories, lies solely with Oda.

With that being said, I am curious to know your thoughts on who you believe to be Luffy’s true mother and which theory you find most convincing. Feel free to share your speculations in the comment section below.
