Her character has resonated with fans and her formidable skills as a sorcerer have been a highlight. Maki Zenin is a prominent supporting character in Jujutsu Kaisen and also one of its main protagonists. Alongside her classmates Panda and Toge Inumaki, Maki attends Tokyo Jujutsu High as a second-year student. She is the elder twin sister of Mai Zenin and the daughter of Ogi Zenin.

Despite being born into one of the prestigious Big Three Sorcerer Families, Maki faced constant mistreatment due to her lack of sorcerer abilities. This led her to reject her own Zenin clan, especially since she possessed very little cursed energy and couldn’t even see Curses. In order to prove her family wrong, Maki was determined to become a powerful jujutsu sorcerer.

Despite being born with minimal Cursed Energy, she possessed something else – Heavenly Restriction. This bestowed upon her incredible physical strength, elevating her to the highest level of human potential. Furthermore, she honed her skills in wielding Cursed Tools through rigorous training, making her a formidable adversary for sorcerers.

Despite being grouped with the Gojo and Kamo Clans as one of the Big Three Sorcerer Families, the Zenin Clan’s history is plagued by the problematic ideals that come with their noble status as a major clan. Their obsession with strong Cursed Techniques (CT) is paramount to all else.

It was common for the clan to remove their own family members from power if they were not considered strong enough. A notable instance of this was seen in Toji Zenin, a skilled combatant who was rejected by the clan for his lack of CE. As a result, he chose to depart from the clan and adopt the surname Fushiguro.

Likewise, Maki made the decision to depart from the clan in order to pursue a path as a sorcerer, in defiance of her fellow clan members. The clan had deliberately hindered Maki’s advancement and coerced her sister, Mai, into becoming a sorcerer against her wishes. The Zenin Clan imposes strict standards on its female members, expecting them to be attractive and compliant at all times, while placing unrealistic demands on them when compared to their male counterparts.

After waking up, Maki proceeded to kill her entire clan. This occurred during Jujutsu Kaisen’s ‘Perfect Preparation Arc,’ when she returned to the clan warehouse to retrieve her Cursed Tools. However, her father Ogi intervened and attempted to eliminate both Maki and Mai (who were also present) in order to rectify his mistakes.

Despite their defeat in battle, the sisters were not left to suffer in the pit of Cursed Spirits. In her final moments, Mai used the last of her strength to transfer her CE to Maki and summon the powerful Split Soul Katana for her sister. In exchange, Mai made one final plea – for Maki to destroy everything.

After unlocking the full potential of her Heavenly Restriction, Maki used her newfound power to seek revenge on the Zenin Clan. She sought retribution for the suffering she and Mai endured during their childhood. Mai fully supported Maki’s decision, as she too was forced to become a sorcerer against her wishes. Her pleas for a normal life had been constantly ignored.
