A talented YouTuber has ingeniously transformed a Nintendo Switch Lite by encasing it within the shell of a Wii U GamePad, resulting in a distinctive handheld device that maintains the classic appearance of the Wii U controller while operating authentic Switch hardware.

The creative force behind this project, modder Kouzex, showcased his work in a recent video on his channel. His inspiration stemmed from observing numerous online discussions where gamers expressed a desire for the ergonomic benefits of the Wii U GamePad combined with the portability of the Nintendo Switch.

When skeptics questioned the feasibility of integrating Switch hardware into the GamePad, Kouzex embraced the challenge, setting out to prove them wrong.

Innovative Switch Lite Integration Inside a Wii U GamePad

To ensure the project’s success and integrity, Kouzex established five essential guidelines prior to commencing work. These included ensuring that every button on the GamePad would function, the external appearance had to remain unchanged, the device must utilize actual Switch hardware rather than an emulator, it needed to be sufficiently durable for transport, and it had to outperform the standard Switch Lite in terms of usability.

Utilizing a Switch Lite was a strategic choice, as its integrated controls minimized wiring complexity and eliminated the necessity of Joy-Con power management. The ambitious build required disassembling both devices, meticulously resizing internal components, installing everything within the GamePad, and rewiring each button for functionality.

Post-installation, he further enhanced the Switch Lite by replacing its screen with an OLED panel, adhering to his stipulation that the modified device must surpass the original handheld’s quality.

Kouzex described the final outcome as looking “barely modified, ” referring to it as a sleeper build. He noted, “Literally every button on the GamePad corresponds to a button on the Switch, ” with the only alteration being the remapping of the TV button to function as the capture button.

Despite its innovative design, Kouzex acknowledged two primary limitations of the system. Firstly, it lacks a cartridge slot, which he considers inconsequential as digital games can be readily downloaded. Secondly, the modified system runs approximately five degrees warmer than a standard Switch Lite, a concern that Kouzex intends to explore further.
