There is an increasing curiosity surrounding the identity of the “shirt room” referenced by Choi Minhwan while requesting a “lady” .
Previously, Choi Minhwan’s ex-spouse, Yulhee, who was once a member of LABOUM, ignited a scandal by sharing an audio recording that allegedly captured Choi Minhwan frequenting venues for entertainment and soliciting prostitution. In the audio, Choi Minhwan is heard insistently asking an employee of an entertainment venue for a “lady,” which raised further suspicions about his intentions when he sought a place to stay.
At 2 a.m. on August 10, 2022, Choi Minhwan reached out to an employee, identified as A, inquiring, “Are there no hotels open? Is there anywhere available right now?” After the employee informed him that booking through apps was unavailable at that time and he would need to contact hotels directly, Choi Minhwan continued to press for suggestions, stating, “Don’t you know of any places?” He showed persistence in asking for a motel, indicating any form of accommodation would suffice.
In a separate interaction, he requested A to “get two toothbrushes and two packs of ‘Condition’.” This has led some individuals to speculate that “Condition,” recognized as a hangover relief product, could be a code for male contraceptives.
On October 25, the Gangnam Police Station in Seoul announced the commencement of an investigation into Choi Minhwan’s supposed infringement of the Anti-Prostitution Law, following a complaint from a citizen lodged through the National Sinmungo platform. The individual, a former fan of F.T. Island, expressed disbelief upon hearing the allegations and called for a comprehensive inquiry into Choi Minhwan and any potential prostitution facilitator.
The terminology in the recording has also been a focal point of discussion. Choi Minhwan made references to phrases such as “shirt room” (a place where hostesses commonly sit on customers’ laps while changing into a white shirt after stripping) and “rotation” (a procedure in upscale venues where hostesses are cycled among clients), along with inquiries regarding “the cost of services” and the capacity to select “the women” .
These conversations have led to questions about the potential consequences Choi Minhwan might face. Prostitution is a criminal offense for both patrons and providers. However, some legal experts suggest proving such claims could be challenging. Lawyer Moon Yoo-jin commented on SBS’s “News Briefing” , noting that while the recording raises suspicions of illegal activity, it remains uncertain if formal charges will be pursued.
Furthermore, Lawyer Moon referenced Yulhee’s allegations of sexual misconduct against Choi Minhwan, including her assertion that “he touched her inappropriately in front of her family” . He pointed out that even consensual marriages do not exempt one from charges of rape and sexual assault, indicating Choi Minhwan could be liable for both illegal prostitution and coercive indecent acts.
