Windows 11 25H2: Automatic Upgrade Process Begins
Microsoft has initiated the automatic upgrade of Windows 11 25H2 for devices currently running version 23H2. This transition is particularly crucial as version 23H2 officially reached its end of support on November 11, 2025. While the 25H2 update was first made available on September 30, 2025, it remained an optional update until now.
Details of the Upgrade
As of November 11, 2025, users operating Home and Pro editions of Windows 11 23H2 will see their systems automatically upgraded to version 25H2 through the Windows Update settings. However, Microsoft will not facilitate automatic upgrades for managed devices that are part of the Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions.
Importance of Upgrading
The urgency for users to transition to version 25H2 stems from the fact that version 23H2 has reached its end of support. Devices that do not update will be at risk of missing critical security updates, which can leave them vulnerable to potential threats.
Upgrade Options Available
For those still utilizing version 23H2, upgrading to version 25H2 can be done easily without navigating through Windows Update settings, utilizing the Installation Assistant, or downloading an ISO file. It’s essential to keep in mind that any method chosen for installation will initiate a complete reinstallation process.
Choosing the Right Version
Even though version 24H2 remains supported, upgrading directly to version 25H2 is advised, given that both operating systems essentially function identically—the only distinction being their version numbers and respective support timelines.
Steps to Upgrade
If you’re ready to transition to version 25H2, simply navigate to Settings > Windows Update. From there, enable the “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” toggle, click on “Check for updates”, and then proceed by clicking “Download & install”.
What to Expect from the Upgrade
For users preferring a hands-free approach, rest assured that the update will install automatically in the coming days. However, it is important to understand that this automated process will not happen instantaneously. Microsoft is rolling out the upgrade gradually, prioritizing devices likely to have smoother upgrade experiences.
