Modern Run Dialog Box Coming to Windows 11

  • A revamped Run dialog box has been discovered in the latest Windows 11 preview builds.
  • The new interface features a larger layout, Fluent Design aesthetics, recent commands, and app suggestions with icons.
  • Microsoft intends to allow users to toggle this feature on or off via Settings.
  • The redesign remains in development and has not yet been officially confirmed by Microsoft.

In a surprising turn of events, Microsoft is updating one of the most enduring elements of Windows 11 – the Run dialog box. After nearly three decades without a substantial redesign, this iconic interface is set for a modern makeover. The revelation comes courtesy of @PhantomOfEarth on X, who uncovered the updated dialog hidden within the latest preview builds of the operating system.

The Run box, accessed through the “Windows key + R” keyboard shortcut, has been a staple since Windows 95. Despite its long-standing presence, its appearance has remained largely unchanged for many years. Microsoft’s initiative to refresh this tool signifies a significant shift in its user interface, marking the first major visual update in approximately 30 years.

The newly introduced feature, dubbed the modern Run dialog interface, incorporates Microsoft’s Fluent Design principles. This design language enhances the user experience with rounded corners, improved spacing, and an overall more coherent layout that aligns with the modern aesthetic of Windows 11. The updated dialog presents a larger text field and introduces a “recent commands”section just above the input area. Furthermore, as users type commands, the interface suggests matching applications along with their respective icons, leading to smoother navigation and improved usability.

Interestingly, Microsoft plans to make this design optional. Users will have the flexibility to enable or disable the modern Run dialog within Settings > System > Advanced configurations, using the “Run dialog” toggle switch.

If users prefer the familiar compact style of the classic Run dialog, they can easily revert to it with a single click. This choice reflects Microsoft’s recent efforts to enhance customization options, which include introducing a dark mode for the classic dialog as well.

However, it is essential to note that this updated Run dialog is still in the early stages of development and currently hidden within the Windows 11 preview build 26534. Microsoft has yet to make an official announcement regarding this feature, suggesting that it may still undergo further refinement before a wider release. Nevertheless, the progress observed hints that an official discussion may be expected in the coming months.

This discovery signals a broader shift within Microsoft towards addressing long-standing inconsistencies across the Windows 11 interface. Recently, enhancements to dark mode have been introduced across various legacy elements, including the transition of File Explorer dialogs. Minor upgrades such as these contribute to a more coherent and intelligently designed operating system experience.

The modernization of the Run dialog raises intriguing questions about future enhancements. Many longtime users would appreciate similar updates for other essential components, such as the File Properties window or the Registry Editor, which have remained virtually unchanged since the Windows 95 and XP eras.
