A 36-year-old mother from the UK is making headlines after an incident in which she broke her neck while yawning—a startling reminder of the unexpected dangers of everyday actions. Hayley Black, who is a mother of two, shared her remarkable story on TikTok, which has recently gone viral, re-igniting interest in her near-fatal experience from 2016.

The incident occurred in the early hours while Hayley was caring for her newborn daughter Amelia. As the baby yawned while waiting for a feed, Hayley instinctively followed suit. This seemingly innocuous action led to a catastrophic outcome. She described the moment as feeling like an “electric shock” coursing through one side of her body, which left her startled and in severe pain.

“My arm got stuck in the air and I was having these electric spark sensations, ” she recounted.“It was like having a seizure down half of my body. I knew instantly something was dreadfully wrong.”

After the alarming incident, Hayley was rushed to the hospital. She recalled the ambulance journey as “excruciating, ”with medics having to stabilize her neck using blocks. Upon arrival, initial scans delivered puzzling results—nothing appeared amiss, despite Hayley’s overwhelming pain and desperation.

In her own words, Hayley expressed frustration at the medical staff’s initial dismissal of her condition: “Nobody was listening to me. I was screaming in pain all night and I had the gas and air… The nurses were getting frustrated with me and said, ‘There’s nothing on the scans, you’re okay.’” This led to further investigations, revealing a shocking conclusion.

Severe Injury Sparks Medical Investigation

Further tests finally unveiled the extent of her injuries; she was completely paralyzed on the right side of her body, a result of her C6 and C7 vertebrae shifting forward during her powerful yawn. The medical term for this extraordinary event was categorized as a “freak accident, ” something that neither Hayley nor her physicians had anticipated.

Subsequent surgery was deemed necessary to address her spinal condition, yet it carried significant risks. Doctors informed her family that she faced a precarious 50/50 chance of survival due to dangerously low oxygen levels during the operation.

“This is far from the first freak accident to take social media by storm.”

Fortunately, the surgical procedure was successful. However, Hayley continues to deal with the aftermath: chronic nerve pain and fibromyalgia. Reflecting on her ordeal, she stated: “The one thing I have taken from it is to be grateful for the small [things].Being chronically ill now because of it means I am so grateful for the good days, for the small moments, for being able to walk and for being here with my children and husband.”
