Collectors of Pokemon cards are willing to pay extra for X-ray scans of unopened Pokemon TCG booster packs, allowing them to inspect the contents without breaking the seals.
Purchasing a fresh booster pack of Pokemon cards always involves a certain level of uncertainty, as each pack is entirely random. Therefore, a significant aspect of the enjoyment of collecting Pokemon cards lies in discovering rare pulls, like Shiny’s, which have a minimal probability of being obtained from a booster pack.
Pokemon Booster packs from the late 1990s can fetch high prices, especially if they remain unopened. This is due to the potential to contain rare cards such as the original Charizard or Pikachu, which are among the most valuable Pokemon cards.
Despite its popularity, the future of Pokemon TCG collections is at risk due to the emergence of X-ray scanning technology. This technology is being utilized to reveal the contents of sealed booster packs, posing a threat to the collectible aspect of the game.
In a recent video, popular Pokemon TCG YouTuber ‘okJLUV’ discussed the use of X-ray scanning technology for booster packs. The YouTuber also mentioned a case study conducted by Industrial Inspection & Consulting, which has sparked a lot of discussion among trading card collectors.
The company’s reputation is built upon its exceptional industrial CT scanning services used to test various products and machine components. However, their recent case study showcased their capability of also examining unopened Pokemon booster packs.
Using 2-D X-ray technology, the company successfully replicated a 3D structure of Pokemon booster packs, allowing for a view of the object’s interior.
After conducting the initial test, II&C proceeded to scan actual sealed Pokemon booster packs and booster kits. Through this process, they were able to detect the shape of the Pokemon using slight density variations in the cards and foils.
The case study’s success and its mention in okJLUV’s YouTube video have resulted in the company receiving numerous requests to scan packs and kits from collectors, investors, and card stores.
Currently, the cost to scan one booster pack with an x-ray is a minimum of $75 charged by the company.
At this time, Pokemon TCG has not provided any comments regarding the use of scanning technology on unopened booster packs. Rest assured, we will continue to keep you informed if there are any updates on the matter.
