A game developer from Virtuos has recently expressed their insights regarding the forthcoming Nintendo Switch 2, stating that virtually any game designed for the Xbox Series S should be compatible for porting to the new hybrid console.

Since the announcement of the Switch 2 in April, gamers and developers alike have been curious about the console’s capabilities and performance metrics. While many believe it performs similarly to the PlayStation 4, others contend that real-world tests indicate its speed is more aligned with the Xbox Series S, largely due to the integration of Nvidia’s DLSS frame generation technology.

Porting Xbox Series S Titles to Switch 2

Eoin O’Grady, the technical director at Black Shamrock—a subsidiary of Virtuos—has shared his perspective on the transition of games between platforms. He asserts that any title running at 60 frames per second (fps) on the Xbox Series S should successfully transition to the Nintendo Switch 2 with relative ease.

According to O’Grady, the graphical performance of the Switch 2’s GPU is “slightly below”that of the Series S. However, the Xbox Series S lacks support for DLSS, while the Switch 2 harnesses this technology, which utilizes artificial intelligence to enhance gaming performance. This aspect makes the GPUs of both consoles more comparable than initially perceived.

Despite the differences in processing power, O’Grady claims that the Switch 2 should still be able to accommodate games from the Series S catalog. He elaborates, “Any game that targets 60 fps on the Series S should easily find a home on the Switch 2. Similarly, titles capped at 30 fps, particularly those constrained by GPU resources, should transfer smoothly.”

Black Shamrock has been involved in developing several games that could see an effective port to the Switch 2, including popular titles such as Marvel’s Midnight Suns, The Outer Worlds, and the Xbox favorite, Grounded.

In addition, following the reveal of the new console, Nvidia announced that the Switch 2 will not only support DLSS frame generation but will also incorporate ray tracing and variable refresh rate capabilities, enhancing gameplay in handheld mode.
