The creators of Yellowstone are giving fans a taste of Season 5 Part 2 by releasing snippets, with one photo hinting at a growing bond between Rip and Carter, portraying a potential father-son dynamic.
During Season 4, Beth Dutton first encountered Carter at a hospital where her father John Dutton was recovering from an assassination attempt. This incident occurred after the dramatic events of the Season 3 finale, which deeply affected the Dutton family.
Despite her initial reluctance, she decided to take the now-orphaned boy under her wing and bring him back to the Dutton Ranch. Her goal was to raise him as her and Rip’s son, but Rip was hesitant and instead chose to hire Carter as the lowest of ranch hands. This decision forced the young boy to quickly mature and take on more responsibilities.
The initial interactions between the two Yellowstone characters were filled with tension, but a sneak peek image for the upcoming Season 5 Part 2 suggests that they may have resolved their differences during the expected time jump. In the image (below), Rip tenderly watches over Carter as he sleeps, showing a newfound level of affection between the two.
Despite his usual hard-headed demeanor, Rip experiences a rare moment of softness, likely triggered by memories of his own difficult upbringing. These memories had initially prevented him from showing sympathy towards Carter.
Rip was initially hired by John Dutton after his father killed his mother and brother when he was a young boy. Seeking revenge, Rip later murdered his father and was discovered in a barn, covered in blood and dirt. John took him in, providing him with protection and a permanent home for the remainder of his life.
As time passed, Rip earned the position of John’s most trusted employee and right-hand man. He was responsible for maintaining order among the other ranch workers and ensuring the safety of the hired hands. Rip’s contributions are essential to the successful management of the estate.
As Kevin Costner’s character, John, will not be present in the upcoming season, it is expected that Rip will take on a bigger role in shaping the future of the ranch.
Despite Beth’s inability to have children (a fact which Rip has come to terms with), the mounting dangers to the ranch and Rip’s increased duties may cause him to reevaluate his goals in life. This could result in more bonding moments between him and Carter, akin to a father-son relationship.
