YouTuber reveals open source gaming handheld in the works

Taki Udon, known for his work as a Modder and YouTuber, has recently revealed his latest venture – an open source handheld device that will rival the numerous handhelds available in the market.

Taki Udon is recognized in the retro gaming community for his efforts to increase accessibility to FPGA gaming through his $99 MiSTer console. Currently, he is directing his efforts towards another aspect of retro gaming, specifically handheld devices.

Taki Udon’s latest project may not be associated with his previous work on MiSTer technology, however, he is still committed to his mission of providing wide accessibility to retro gaming. Consequently, the new handheld device will be completely open source.

The complete development process has been recorded and thoroughly documented, and Taki Udon affirms that he is now on the verge of revealing the specifics of his work.

Surprisingly, in a tweet on Twitter/X, he states, “Anyone, regardless of their skill level, can participate.”This implies that one does not need to be familiar with a soldering iron or programming languages.

It is possible that the handheld will come in various versions, with one being fully assembled and another being sold as a DIY kit.

Taki Udon has been secretive about the details, only sharing a few hints on his Twitter and YouTube channels. One of these teasers features the intro that reads, “3D render for handheld games console”on his community page, but does not reveal the actual design of the console.

Taki Udon shared another image teasing his attendance at a product design review meeting. He mentioned that his “Vice President”would be present for the first time and then revealed a picture of what appeared to be his son. Udon added that his “Vice President”would ultimately have the authority to decide on the color of the handhelds.

Limited information is currently known about Taki Udon’s upcoming project, including details on the CPU and other specifications. It is uncertain whether the device will be a retro-style handheld with an FPGA, similar to the Analogue Pocket, or if it will be emulator-based like the Ayn Odin 2 Mini.
