YouTuber Alexis ‘Quackity’ Maldonado’s newly launched translation application, Dababel, encountered security challenges within mere hours of its debut. The app, designed to facilitate real-time translations for streamers, was unveiled on July 7, aiming to bridge language barriers and expand audiences.
The launch video, which features Breaking Bad actor Luis Moncada experiencing the app’s capabilities as he hears his son speak Spanish for the first time, quickly went viral on social media platform X. This attention, however, inadvertently attracted the interest of a hacker known as Daniel Christensen, also recognized by his handle BobTShoplifter.
Christensen claimed that the app contained significant security vulnerabilities and reached out to Quackity via direct message to report these issues. Unfortunately, when his warnings went unaddressed, he decided to demonstrate the app’s weaknesses by exploiting them, echoing the antics of the popular hacker character Mr. Robot.

Security Breach: An Ethical Hacker’s Approach
After being ignored, BobTShoplifter unveiled several security flaws within Dababel by overtaking the app’s functionalities. One such exploit included a subscription plan labeled “hacked by bob” and another titled “BobTShoplifter on X tryin’ to report several security issues, ” showcased in the app’s plans section.

Christensen elaborated on his actions, stating, “Every time I use a new service, I check their security, too. If I’m gonna be using something, I want to make sure it’s secure.” He further emphasized the importance of security testing, asserting, “I just do it for free so they are safer.”

A screenshot of Christensen’s original tweet and the subsequent hacking incident gained traction online, finally capturing the notice of both Dababel’s team and Quackity. The hacker ensured that personal subscription details remained secure throughout his demonstration, expressing a desire for continued collaboration to enhance the app’s security.
While Dababel may have narrowly escaped a major catastrophe, this incident serves as a reminder that many companies face significant cybersecurity threats. Notably, even prominent brands like McDonald’s have experienced breaches; in 2024, the restaurant suffered a takeover of its official Instagram account, resulting in a loss of approximately $700, 000 to crypto scammers.
