Hytale’s lead developer has candidly stated that it was “a damn miracle”that they managed to salvage the much-anticipated sandbox RPG.
First unveiled in 2018, Hytale quickly captured the gaming community’s attention with its blend of survival elements, adventure, and robust creative tools, akin to Minecraft. Developed by Hypixel Studios, the project received significant momentum when the studio was acquired by Riot Games, the creators behind League of Legends, in 2020. However, a series of delays and evolving project scopes resulted in the game’s cancellation and the studio’s closure in 2023.
In an unexpected turn, the team reacquired the rights to Hytale, reviving development independently. Co-director Simon Collins-Laflamme noted that while the turnaround was swift, the journey to getting the game back on track has presented numerous challenges.

“It’s a damn miracle we were able to salvage Hytale. It was barely playable. All basics were broken—camera, movement, combat, crafting, building, game loop, sounds, rendering. Everything was either malfunctioning or non-functional, ” he elaborated.
Currently, Hytale is slated for an early access launch on January 13, 2026. Collins-Laflamme emphasizes that the focus is now on a gameplay-centric approach and rebuilding player trust rather than hastily pushing for a full 1.0 release.
