If you encounter issues with your Windows 11 system, accessing the Advanced Startup Options (Windows Recovery Environment or WinRE) might be essential. Accessing WinRE via the Settings App

To enter WinRE through the Settings app, perform the following steps:

Navigate to Settings.
Select System.
Click on the Recovery option on the right menu.
Under the “Advanced Startup” section, click Restart Now.
Confirm by clicking Restart Now again.

Upon restarting, you will automatically be logged out and directed to the startup options.

Note: Accessing Advanced Startup via the Settings app is not possible through a Remote Desktop Connection.

Using the Quick Link Menu to Access WinRE

You can quickly access the Advanced Startup options from the power menu, available via the Start menu, Task Manager, or Lock screen:

From the Start Menu

Open the Start menu.
Click on the Power button.
While holding the Shift key, select Restart.

Using Task Manager

Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to open the menu.
Select the Power button in the lower right corner.
Hold down the Shift key and click Restart.

Accessing from the Lock Screen

On the lock screen, press Windows key + L.
Navigate to the Sign-in screen.

Using Command Prompt to Access WinRE

To enter the Recovery Environment via Command Prompt, follow these instructions:

Open the Start menu.
Search for Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator.
Type the command below and hit Enter:

shutdown /r /o /f /t 00

Using USB Installation Media to Access WinRE

If your Windows 11 device won’t boot, a bootable USB drive can help you access recovery options:

Insert the Windows 11 USB flash drive into your PC.
Start your computer and press any key to proceed.
Select your preferred language and format.
Click Next.
Choose your keyboard input method.
Click Next again.
Select the Repair my PC option.

Accessing WinRE via Automatic Repair

For Windows that won’t start, you can access recovery options through Automatic Repair:

Press the power button to turn on your PC.
As soon as you see the Windows logo, press the power button again to shut down.
Repeat the above steps twice more. On the third restart, Windows should open the Recovery Environment.
Select your Windows account and confirm your password.
Click the Continue button and then select Advanced Startup.

Utilizing WinRE Tools

When you enter the Advanced Startup options, start by selecting Troubleshoot. Here, you will find crucial tools such as Reset this PC and options for system restoration.

Additional features include System Restore, System Image Recovery, and Startup Repair, which can fix boot-related problems. Furthermore, you can access Command Prompt for more advanced troubleshooting and use Startup Settings to enter Safe Mode.

If you recently installed an update that is problematic, you can uninstall it. Remember to disable BitLocker if it’s enabled, before you try accessing the Advanced Startup options again.
