There’s no better way to do that than by dramatically entering a scene, as we did with a police raid involving a young suspect.”
Launched in 2014, 24 Hours in Police Custody has aired 74 episodes over 11 seasons, primarily focused on crime investigations carried out by the Bedfordshire Police in the Luton area. In contrast, Adolescence centers its storyline around a singular murder case, exploring the arrest, police interrogation, and the psychological evaluations of the young suspect while also addressing the repercussions of the incident on his family and school community.
Each episode of 24 Hours in Police Custody focuses on a distinct case, reflecting the legal realities that UK authorities face—suspects can be held for up to 24 hours without charge, after which they may need to be released, formally charged, or retained for further questioning if the crime is deemed serious.
In crafting Adolescence, writer Jack Thorne committed to authentic storytelling, researching youth culture online to understand the motivations that lead adolescents to violence. He noted, “Platforms like TikTok, Twitter, and even the Dark Web were critical in uncovering the environments that influence young people.” Thorne expressed how delving into these aspects, while uncomfortable, was essential for authenticity and helped him grasp the logic behind such troubling behaviors.
