Project Hail Mary has made waves in both the critical and commercial spheres since its release, breaking several box office records in the process. Here’s a closer look at this sci-fi sensation and its remarkable achievements.
A Journey into the Unknown
Starring the talented Ryan Gosling, Project Hail Mary follows a scientist stranded in space, struggling to piece together the mystery of his circumstances. The film defies conventional Hollywood norms by weaving a thrilling narrative about first contact and the urgent mission to preserve humanity.
Adapted from the renowned novel by Andy Weir and helmed by directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the film boasts an impressive 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Our own review praised the film, granting it a perfect five stars and describing it as a “minor miracle that seamlessly blends sci-fi, action, comedy, tragedy, and high drama.” This captivating storytelling has resonated with audiences, resulting in a substantial box office performance.
Record-Breaking Box Office Performance

In its opening weekend, Project Hail Mary has already set a record for 2026, accumulating a staggering $80.5 million in the US and Canada, supplemented by an additional $60.4 million from international markets. This brings its global total to an astounding $140.9 million, far surpassing early projections.
Initial estimates from Deadline suggested a domestic debut of $45 to $55 million back in February, while Variety had forecasted a range of $63 to $65 million just days prior to the film’s release. Not only does this mark the largest opening weekend of the year, narrowly eclipsing Scream 7’s worldwide total of $97.2 million, but it also stands as the highest debut for an Amazon/MGM production, surpassing Creed III’s $100.4 million.
Additionally, Project Hail Mary has emerged as one of the few non-sequel or franchise films to earn over $50 million internationally since the global shutdown, joining the ranks of Oppenheimer, F1: The Movie, and Superman. It parallels Oppenheimer as just the second non-franchise film in the past decade to debut above $80 million domestically.
The Path Ahead for Project Hail Mary

Reflecting on the film’s success, Kevin Wilson, Amazon’s head of distribution, expressed, “Andy Weir’s beloved novel provided a strong foundation, and Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have crafted a visually stunning film that captivates audiences. Ryan Gosling’s performance is exceptional and enhances the film’s appeal.”
Despite its achievements, the film still has significant milestones to meet; it must gross over $500 million to reach break-even, given an estimated budget of $200 million.
