Burnie Burns, a pivotal figure in the founding of Rooster Teeth, has successfully acquired the brand nearly a year after its definitive closure.
In March 2024, Warner Brothers Discovery announced the shutdown of the beloved internet brand, which had been in operation for over twenty years, following failed efforts to sell it.
A New Era for Rooster Teeth
Originally making waves in 2003 with the groundbreaking Halo-based web series, Red vs Blue, Rooster Teeth expanded to include popular titles such as RWBY and Gen: LOCK. Additionally, it operated the Roost Podcast Network, which was divested during the shutdown process.
Burnie’s Comeback
On February 5, 2025, Burnie Burns publicly announced his acquisition of the remaining assets of Rooster Teeth, returning to the brand from which he stepped away in 2020.
This announcement was shared through a post on the Rooster Teeth website, highlighting that the brand will now integrate into his production firm, Box Canyon Productions. Burns commented, “This milestone marks a new chapter for Rooster Teeth as it returns to the hands of its original creator as part of his company Box Canyon Productions.” The statement further emphasized a commitment to rejuvenating the brand’s focus on creativity, community, and innovation that initially propelled its success.
In conjunction with this revival, Burns revealed that Box Canyon has an exciting array of projects lined up for 2025, including a revival of some of Rooster Teeth’s classic series alongside a new audio adventure titled Again.
Excitement from Fans and Industry Trends
While the timeline for new content remains uncertain, the anticipation surrounding Rooster Teeth’s revitalization is palpable. Initial buzz was resurrected on social media with a quirky post on the Rooster Teeth account, marking its first communication since May 2024, which simply stated “butts.”
Fans swiftly engaged with the announcement, voicing their enthusiasm through a mix of emojis and comments such as, “Burnie leaving and years later reacquiring RT is something I never thought would happen, ” demonstrating the community’s keen interest in the brand’s future.

Another fan expressed optimism, stating, “Whatever RT’s going to be now, I know that with Burnie’s help, it’s going to be great.”
This trend of founders reacquiring their former companies isn’t unique to Rooster Teeth. Notably, in December 2024, Sean Evans and Chris Schonberger reclaimed their brand, First We Feast, from BuzzFeed, supported by a group of investors that featured popular content creators Rhett and Link.
