Christopher Nolan’s film Interstellar stands out as one of the director’s most commercially successful works, yet behind the scenes, Nolan faced challenges, particularly with Timothée Chalamet’s portrayal during filming.

Nolan’s filmography is renowned for its quality, boasting critically acclaimed pieces such as Memento—considered a mind-bending classic—alongside the iconic Batman trilogy and the harrowing war epic Dunkirk. Recent accolades surrounding his latest project, Oppenheimer, further solidify his illustrious career, with our review noting that “it feels like Christopher Nolan’s career has been building to this.”

Interstellar, released in 2014, managed to gross nearly $800 million globally, securing its position as one of his top financial successes. However, there was a specific scene that did not meet Nolan’s expectations.

In Interstellar, Chalamet shared the screen with an impressive cast that includes Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine, Ellen Burstyn, and Matt Damon. Notably, Chalamet’s role was among his earliest major film appearances.

During a recent 70mm IMAX screening of the film, Chalamet expressed his admiration for the project, stating it remains his favorite film, despite his limited screen time. He remarked, “Though my role is not enormous in Interstellar – I think I was number 12 on the call sheet – this film came to me at a time in life, in my career, where things were certainly not set yet. And it’s remained my favorite project I’ve ever been in. It’s the film I’ve seen the most of, of all the films ever made in human history.”

Nevertheless, the young actor experienced disappointment upon seeing the finished product, realizing that several of his scenes had been edited out. This includes a particularly emotive moment during the sequence where McConaughey’s character, Cooper, receives messages from his family. This specific scene presented a challenge for Nolan, who shared his concerns regarding the performance:

“When you were filming the messages from home, there was a particular thing where you were hitting a dark tone. It felt too much for me. I didn’t particularly like it. I told you about it and you went ahead and did whatever the f*ck you wanted and carried on. But I was like, ‘He knows what he wants to do and has an idea.’ It wasn’t about being stubborn. You had planned what you wanted to do. You wanted to test that and challenge that and see if I kept coming back, which I didn’t. I’ll find a logic to that in the edit suite.”

As of now, Timothée Chalamet can be seen in the film Marty Supreme, while Christopher Nolan’s upcoming project, The Odyssey, is set to release this summer.
