Cillian Murphy is expected to return for the highly anticipated third installment of the 28 Years Later series, which is set to conclude a trilogy. However, director Danny Boyle has made it clear that this is not yet certain.
The unveiling of the trailer for 28 Years Later sparked excitement as many fans believed they spotted what appeared to be an undead Jim emerging from a field. However, it was later revealed that the character is actually named Angus Neill. Despite this, Cillian Murphy’s involvement in the franchise remains significant.
Murphy serves as an executive producer for both the upcoming film and its sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, directed by Nia DaCosta. Boyle has indicated that while Murphy’s role in The Bone Temple will be limited, his contributions are crucial for setting the stage for the third film.
Potential Dominance of Cillian Murphy in Future Installments

For the third film to be green-lighted, 28 Years Later must perform well at the box office. Boyle specifically cited the importance of support from Sony, particularly CEO Tom Rothman: “If we get the funding, Cillian will undoubtedly be a dominant presence in the third installment, ”he stated.
In a discussion on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Boyle emphasized, “Good things come to those who wait.” This sentiment was echoed in an earlier interview with Business Insider, where he expressed hope that Murphy’s presence would assist in financing the next chapter.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the third film, Boyle explained that the overall story arc has been meticulously crafted, becoming a vital part of the trilogy’s narrative.“It’s really just a matter of waiting for the box office results, ”he mentioned.
Producer Andrew Macdonald elaborated on the trilogy’s thematic continuity, explaining how the character Spike, played by Alfie Williams, serves as a connecting thread throughout the films. He noted: “We’ve filmed the first two installments back-to-back for logistical and narrative coherence.”
Fans can anticipate the release of 28 Years Later in theaters on June 19, 2025.
