Dewey Star Explains Why Bryan Cranston’s Malcolm in the Middle Reboot Was Shut Down

In an unexpected turn of events, Erik Per Sullivan, renowned for his role as Dewey in the iconic sitcom Malcolm in the Middle, recently opted out of participating in the show’s upcoming reboot. It’s not due to any ill feelings, but rather a significant opportunity in his life.

Malcolm in the Middle has long been celebrated as a hallmark of comedy from the early 2000s, famed for its unique style and memorable theme song that echoes through the minds of many millennials. After its original run, the sitcom left a lasting legacy and propelled its cast members into diverse careers.

While Frankie Muniz, who played Malcolm, transitioned into a career as a real estate investor and NASCAR driver, Bryan Cranston found international fame as Walter White in Breaking Bad. Conversely, Erik Per Sullivan seemed to fade from the spotlight, raising curiosity about his current endeavors amidst the news of a revival.

Update on Erik Per Sullivan: Harvard Awaits

During a recent episode of the Fly On The Wall podcast, Bryan Cranston shed light on Sullivan’s absence from the reboot, revealing that the talented actor is currently attending Harvard University.

Cranston shared, “I talked to Erik and I said, ‘Hey, we got the show! It’s going to come back.’ He goes, ‘Oh, that’s fantastic!’ When I mentioned welcoming him back, he replied, ‘Oh, no, no, I don’t want to do it. But it’s fantastic.’” Remarkably, it appears that Sullivan is among the few able to turn down an opportunity to work alongside Heisenberg.

Cranston praised Sullivan’s decision, noting, “He’s actually going to Harvard. He’s really, really smart, and he’s getting his master’s at Harvard right now. He said, ‘Oh God, no, I haven’t acted since I was nine or something. So I’m not into it.’” This decision showcases his commitment to education over acting, a choice that Cranston clearly respects.

Announced in December 2024, the Malcolm in the Middle reboot will feature a streamlined format of just four episodes, premiering exclusively on Disney+.The original series aired for seven successful seasons on Fox from 2000 to 2006, cementing its place in television history.

Returning cast members alongside Cranston and Muniz include Christopher Masterson and Justin Berfield, reprising their roles as Francis and Reese, with Jane Kaczmarek returning as the beloved Lois. Additionally, Keeley Karsten will debut as Malcolm’s daughter, Leah.

The reboot’s storyline revolves around a chaotic family gathering, as the characters come together to celebrate Hal and Lois’s 40th wedding anniversary. While there is no official release date yet, fans are eagerly anticipating more updates on this exciting revival.
