Discord has significantly expanded its default server member limit from 500, 000 to an impressive 2.5 million members. This enhancement empowers larger online communities to thrive without the constraints previously enforced by the platform’s size limits.

This strategic decision coincides with the rapid growth of certain communities on Discord, particularly notable ones like Midjourney and Genshin Impact, which have collectively attracted millions of members. In light of this increase, Discord has established a process through which servers that exceed the new threshold can request even higher limits, contingent upon an evaluation that considers moderation practices, community engagement, and adherence to Trust & Safety guidelines.

New Opportunities with a 2.5 Million Member Cap

In the patch notes released on July 7, Discord highlighted these enhancements: “We’ve made a whole bunch of changes recently to better support large servers. The default member cap has been raised from 500K to 2.5M (yes, MILLION), and we’ve boosted the loading speed of member lists for large servers for smoother management and navigation.”

The platform also improved its monitoring systems, which automatically detect and resolve performance issues specific to individual servers, negating the need for users to submit support requests.

In the past year, Discord has rolled out several new features aimed at enhancing the overall user experience and simplifying community management. A standout addition introduced in early 2025 was the Soundboard feature, which allows users to play short sound clips during voice chats. Furthermore, the Activities feature has been expanded, providing built-in games and collaborative applications that keep users engaged without leaving the platform.

Additional updates included enhanced moderation tools, such as improvements to AutoMod, and the creation of Quests—time-limited sponsored experiences that enrich server activity. Moreover, performance enhancements to the mobile application have been prioritized, with multiple updates focused on minimizing crashes and improving the stability of voice and video communications.

These recent adjustments, including the substantial increase in server capacity and the introduction of innovative features, are all part of Discord’s ongoing commitment to adapt to its rapidly expanding user community.
