Nintendo enthusiasts are expressing their concerns as reports emerge of players being banned from their Switch 2 consoles due to the use of second-hand Switch 1 cartridges. These cartridges, reportedly purchased from platforms like Facebook Marketplace or even borrowed from libraries, are at the center of the controversy.

On July 8, a Reddit user detailed their experience, stating that their Switch 2 was banned after inserting pre-owned Switch 1 games and trying to download updates. The player claimed that Nintendo flagged their titles as potential copies of original content.

“Be careful buying used Switch 1 games. You can get banned if a bad actor dumped it, ” they warned.“I inserted the game into my Switch 2 one by one and waited to patch… Today I turned on the console and was told my online service was restricted.”

Consequences of Using Copied Software

The player further elaborated that even legitimate digital games were blocked from downloading following the ban. They explained the situation in more detail in the Reddit thread, indicating the origins of the problem.

“The seller or someone else made a copy of the games on a MIG cartridge. Then they sold the originals. Any time both the original and a copy come online, both get banned. Then you contact Nintendo and show them that you have the original games. They unban you, and the thief stays banned, ” they detailed.

To their relief, Nintendo reversed the ban after the user provided photographic evidence of their legitimate cartridges along with the original listings from Facebook.

“If you get banned, go [to Nintendo support] and under Talk to a human select Start Chat. It’s fast, painless, and you get a live person helping you!”

Another user on Reddit recounted a similar experience, where their ban resulted from library rentals that had been copied previously. Fortunately, they also managed to resolve the issue by contacting Nintendo support and shared their interaction.

“Stay away from using the library, ” they advised.“The odds are really good that some jerk will copy them.”

This controversy arises as Nintendo faces legal challenges in Brazil related to its policy of bricking consoles and restricting access to services like the eShop if it suspects users have breached its terms—this includes the use of unauthorized accessories or pirated software.
