The creative mind behind Netflix’s popular adaptations of Castlevania and Devil May Cry, Adi Shankar, is gearing up for another exciting project: an adaptation of the iconic video game series Duke Nukem. This announcement reflects Netflix’s commitment to tapping into the world of video game intellectual properties (IPs), which has led to a variety of animated series capturing audiences’ imaginations.

Netflix has seen tremendous success with its animated adaptations based on video game franchises, showcasing titles like Cyberpunk Edgerunners, The Witcher, Arcane, and Tomb Raider, with more on the horizon, including Splinter Cell: Deathwatch set to premiere in 2025.

Duke Nukem: A New Chapter for the Iconic Franchise

In a recent interview with Esquire, Shankar shared insights about his upcoming projects, revealing his acquisition of the rights to Duke Nukem. While he previously collaborated on various video game IPs, this acquisition opens the door for a potential film or television series featuring the legendary character.

Interestingly, Shankar clarified that he did not acquire the gaming rights from Gearbox, the franchise’s current owners, which leaves the door open for creative reinterpretation without the constraints of corporate influence.

Shankar’s vision for Duke Nukem aims to return to the franchise’s roots. He stated, “It’s a middle finger to everybody, ” highlighting his desire to create a product that remains true to the original spirit of the game. According to him, the essence of Duke Nukem lies in its irreverence, which often gets lost when corporations attempt to commercialize it. He is determined to maintain creative control over the project.

As Shankar embarks on this new venture, questions remain about its potential impact on current Duke Nukem cinematic efforts led by Legendary Entertainment, which secured film rights back in 2022.

For now, however, Shankar is concentrating on delivering the second season of Devil May Cry as he aims to elevate his work to new heights. He is determined to outshine past successes, setting ambitious viewership targets for his upcoming projects, particularly wanting to surpass the acclaimed Arcane.

“Arcane is like the Joker lighting cash on fire; it’s phenomenal, ” he remarked, adding, “With Season 2 of Devil May Cry, I want to bring something that demolishes expectations—showing up to a tank fight with a water balloon and winning.”
