Elon Musk Criticized for Urging Blizzard to Accelerate Diablo 5 Development

Elon Musk, the CEO of X, recently faced criticism from fans after he inquired about the progress of the next installment in the Diablo franchise. Known for being a passionate gamer, Musk has publicly expressed his enthusiasm for action role-playing games (ARPGs) such as Diablo and Path of Exile 2, although he has acknowledged using methods to level up more swiftly in these games.

Among his gaming exploits, Musk’s engagement with Diablo 4 stands out, as he frequently shares his milestones within the game and briefly held the title of the top player globally. His latest comments regarding the series, however, led to backlash from the gaming community, particularly when he urged Blizzard Entertainment to expedite the development of Diablo 5.

Criticism Aimed at Musk for Gaming Insights

Recently, Blizzard released a roadmap for Diablo 4, outlining upcoming expansions and collaborations scheduled for 2025 and beyond. Yet, this development did not satisfy Musk, who seemingly overlooked the existing content and instead queried about the timeline for Diablo 5’s release. In a social media post, he remarked, “The core engine is getting rather dated, ” prompting further response from the gaming community.

Musk’s remarks sparked a wave of criticism from fans, many of whom found it surprising that he would label the Diablo 4 engine as outdated just two years after its launch. One user succinctly stated, “He’s gotta be the fakest gamer alive, ” implying a disconnect between Musk’s status and his knowledge of gaming timelines.

Another user commented, “This is like being a kid… When you’d throw all the cheat codes at a game and wonder why you get bored of it in 2 hours, ” emphasizing the perception that Musk’s gaming experience may not reflect that of a dedicated player.

In contrast, some defenders of Diablo 4 argued that the game’s engine remains robust and functional, disputing Musk’s assertion. One notable response quipped, “‘The core engine is getting kind of dated, ’ it’s like if you asked a 57-year-old who’s never held a controller to talk like a nerd, ” further criticizing Musk’s credibility as a gamer.
