Rising Tensions in the EXO Fandom: The Boycott of Zhang Yixing
The excitement surrounding EXO’s upcoming activities is overshadowed by rising tensions among fans, particularly regarding member Zhang Yixing, also known as Lay. A significant boycott initiated by displeased Korean fans is set to continue until the end of 2026, making this one of the most contentious moments in the group’s 13-year history.

New Album Announcement and Fans’ Outrage
Exacerbating the situation, SM Entertainment recently confirmed EXO’s long-anticipated comeback, marking their first full group activity since members completed military service. The release of their 8th studio album is paired with a fan meeting called EXO’Verse, set for December 14. Discontent flared when it was revealed that only six members—Suho, Chanyeol, D. O., Kai, Sehun, and Zhang Yixing—would participate, igniting a firestorm among fans.
The absence of the trio—Chen, Baekhyun, and Xiumin—due to ongoing legal disputes with SM Entertainment added to the controversy. However, the focal point of the disagreement lies with Zhang Yixing. Having departed from SM in April 2022, Lay has refrained from engaging in any EXO or SM-related activities since then, which has fueled anger among fans who perceived his exit during EXO’s 10th anniversary as a betrayal.

Divided Opinions: Will Lay’s Return Pull in Fans or Leave Them Cold?
Some speculate that Lay’s involvement is a calculated move aimed at revitalizing EXO’s diminishing popularity in the Chinese market, where he has emerged as a prominent figure in both music and film. Yet, many Korean fans label him a “traitor, ” alleging that he chose individual success over his commitment to the group.
In a show of solidarity, numerous prominent Korean fan sites have ceased operations, signaling a complete withdrawal of support for EXO until at least the end of 2026. On October 28, one of EXO’s most active fan communities in Korea publicly declared its shutdown. Even among his Chinese fanbase, disappointment has led many to join the boycott, expressing frustration over EXO’s current trajectory and the factional disputes within the group.
Challenges Ahead for EXO
K-pop experts anticipate that this comeback may prove to be one of EXO’s most formidable challenges. As the group navigates through internal discord, legal entanglements, and a fiercely competitive industry increasingly dominated by emerging Gen 5 groups such as RIIZE, TWS, and CORTIS, there are concerns regarding the potential performance of the upcoming album. Should it underperform, the outcome could signal a significant decline for EXO, a group once celebrated for its achievements in digital sales and album rankings.

Conversely, some believe that if SM Entertainment utilizes nostalgia effectively and engages Lay’s substantial fanbase in China, EXO could reclaim its status across Asia.
Lay’s Solo Success and Ongoing Legal Disputes
Since his departure from SM, Zhang Yixing has channeled his efforts toward a flourishing solo career. He has established a burgeoning music empire, taken on mentorship roles in music programs, and launched successful tours. Lay also founded Chromosome Entertainment Group, leading to the introduction of a girl group that operates in Korea. His acting endeavors have garnered him critical acclaim in China, particularly with recent projects like Crime Crackdown (2021) and No More Bets (2023).Additionally, his recent art film, Mumu (2025), has received both critical and commercial success.
Meanwhile, the legal tensions between SM Entertainment and CBX (the EXO sub-unit comprising Chen, Baekhyun, and Xiumin) continue. On October 30, INB100 reiterated its commitment to pay 10% of individual revenue, as per earlier agreements, but emphasized that the settlement proposed on October 2 was both arbitrary and unapproved by either party. Both SM and CBX filed formal objections on October 16, further complicating the ongoing legal situation.

CBX has expressed regret over the distress caused to fans amid these disputes, affirming their commitment to uphold the agreement and their intent to rebuild trust with all members while seeking an amicable resolution with SM Entertainment.
The Future of EXO: A Critical Juncture
As EXO approaches what could be one of the most anticipated yet polarizing comebacks of their career, their legacy hangs in a delicate balance, contingent upon factors such as fan devotion, internal unity, and strategic reinvention in a rapidly changing market.
