Forget about the buzz surrounding Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars—there’s an exciting new rumor circulating regarding a potential Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) event that might feature a crossover more than a decade in the making. If the beloved Devil’s Reign storyline from the comics transitions to the big screen, fans could expect thrilling appearances from iconic characters such as Daredevil and Spider-Man.

This speculation arises just ahead of the much-anticipated second season of Daredevil: Born Again, set to debut on Disney+ on March 23. This upcoming season will pick up from the previous season’s cliffhanger, where Matt Murdock (portrayed by Charlie Cox) is forced into hiding after Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpin (played by Vincent D’Onofrio), enacts a martial law that criminalizes vigilantes in New York City.

It is essential to keep in mind that Marvel has a long history of selectively adapting comic book storylines to fit its ongoing narrative. For instance, while Daredevil: Born Again does reference the comic of the same name, it does not serve as a direct adaptation but rather as an homage to Daredevil’s return to Marvel Studios following his stint on Netflix.

With the show already hinting at plot points from the Devil’s Reign arc, it stands to reason that Marvel might be envisaging an event film that incorporates Daredevil, Spider-Man, and a host of other superheroes. Below is a closer look at the Devil’s Reign storyline and the feasible ways it could weave itself into the MCU.

Understanding the Devil’s Reign Storyline

Marvel Comics

In a pivotal moment resembling events in Daredevil: Born Again, the Kingpin ascends to the position of Mayor of New York City during Charles Soule’s 2018 “Mayor Fisk”story arc. While Kingpin initially utilizes his influence to benefit himself, it is in 2021’s Devil’s Reign that he causes widespread havoc.

In this issue by writer Chip Zdarsky and artist Marco Checchetto, Kingpin discovers that he previously knew Daredevil’s true identity, but the hero had utilized the powers of the children of the Purple Man (aka Kilgrave) to erase that knowledge from Kingpin’s memory. This revelation prompts Kingpin to outlaw superheroes across the city, employing a squad of reformed supervillains known as the Thunderbolts, which includes characters like Doctor Octopus and US Agent, to function as his private enforcement.

Marvel Comics

Amid the chaos, pivotal characters emerge, including Luke Cage, who decides to run for Mayor against Kingpin. This prompts a coalition of New York’s heroes—including Daredevil, Spider-Man, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Captain America, and Moon Knight—to unite against Kingpin’s oppressive regime.

Eventually, Daredevil gains the upper hand in his confrontation with Fisk through the use of a gem imbued with some of the Purple Man’s powers, momentarily halting Kingpin’s attacks. Although Daredevil almost kills Fisk, Elektra convinces him to spare Kingpin to allow the authorities to deal with him. Consequently, Luke Cage triumphs in the election for Mayor of New York.

Now, with the comic plot breakdown complete, one might wonder how this intriguing narrative would translate into a movie format. Essentially, it could be streamlined into an action-packed team-up featuring street-level heroes banding together to bring down Kingpin and his Anti-Vigilante Task Force.

Adapting Devil’s Reign for the MCU

As mentioned earlier, Marvel has a knack for cherry-picking elements from comic storylines rather than strictly adhering to the source material, and Devil’s Reign is likely to follow this trend.

Recent reports from notable sources such as The Cosmic Circus indicate that this event film could culminate the arc of Kingpin’s character who re-emerged in the MCU starting with Hawkeye in 2021, further extended through Born Again Season 2 and the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Optimistically, this could steer clear from convolutions such as erasing Daredevil’s identity from Kingpin’s memory, a plot device that would echo too closely to the storyline in Spider-Man: No Way Home and could clutter an already intricate narrative.

By simplifying the plot, an adaptation of Devil’s Reign in the MCU could showcase New York’s heroes joining forces to thwart Kingpin’s reign. The conclusion of Season 1 of Born Again hints at Matt forming an underground network with Karen Page (played by Deborah Ann Woll) and a few remaining honest police officers, making it natural for him to next reach out to his superhero allies.

Additionally, the recent trailer for Season 2 reveals the return of Jessica Jones (portrayed by Krysten Ritter), which suggests an opportunity for Luke Cage (Mike Colter) and Danny Rand/Iron Fist (Finn Jones) to reprise their roles as well. An intriguing possibility arises with Daredevil attempting to engage Spider-Man, considering that Peter’s identity was concealed at the end of No Way Home. Who better to approach than a devout, blind lawyer who believes in fighting for justice?
