Oscar-nominated actress Fernanda Torres, known for her role in I’m Still Here, has come under fire for her involvement in a sketch featuring blackface. Torres, who recently earned acclaim for portraying a woman on a quest to find her politically active husband, has expressed regret over her past actions.
The Brazilian star has gained significant recognition, including a Golden Globe award and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. However, she now faces backlash due to a comedy sketch from 17 years ago that has resurfaced.
Understanding the Blackface Controversy
The contentious skit aired on Brazil’s famous variety show, Fantastico. In the sketch, as highlighted by Deadline, Torres portrayed various characters, including a housekeeper, while in blackface. In light of the upcoming Oscars, she has swiftly released a statement addressing her past cultural insensitivity.
In her apology, Torres stated, “Almost 20 years ago, I appeared in blackface in a comedy sketch from a Brazilian TV show. I am very sorry for this. I’m making this statement as it is important for me to address this swiftly to avoid further pain and confusion.”
She continued, “At that time, despite the efforts of Black movements and organizations, the awareness of the racist history and symbolism of blackface hadn’t yet entered the mainstream public consciousness in Brazil. Thanks to better cultural understanding and important but incomplete achievements in this century, it’s very clear now in our country and everywhere that blackface is never acceptable.”
Furthermore, Torres emphasized the importance of ongoing discussions about race and racism, asserting, “This is an important conversation we must continue to have with one another in order to prevent the normalization of racist practices then and now. As an artist and global citizen, and from my open heart, I remain attentive and committed to the pursuit of vital changes needed to live in a world free from inequality and racism.”
Fernanda Torres wrote an entire article mocking Amber Heard and stigmatizing domestic violence victims and feminism. And now she stole an Oscar slot that should’ve gone to Angelina Jolie or Pamela Anderson, victims of domestic/sexual violence who always side with women 😓#Oscars pic.twitter.com/rXpEKLHcWt

Previously, Torres attracted criticism for an op-ed she wrote regarding the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard trial, in which she suggested that Heard had put on a “$50 million” show in court.
I’m Still Here is currently in theaters and has garnered nominations for Best Picture, Best International Feature Film, and Best Actress at the upcoming Academy Awards, slated for March 2, 2025. For insights on this year’s top Oscar snub, click here.
