An ex-employee of Linus Media Group has shared an extensive video detailing his departure from the company after nearly a decade of service. Jake Tivy, who resigned on August 6, 2025, attributed his decision to stagnant wages, escalating living costs, evolving workplace expectations, and a growing dissatisfaction with project and team management.

During his time at the Vancouver-based firm—part of the team behind popular channels such as Linus Tech Tips, Short Circuit, and Techquickie—Tivy escalated from basic warehouse and labor roles to positions in infrastructure IT, supervising the LTT writing team, and managing logistics, as the company expanded from about 10 employees to over 100.

Financial Discontent and Evolving Work Culture

In his video, Tivy emphasized that the catalyst for his exit stemmed from persistent feelings of being undervalued, especially regarding compensation.“After 3 plus years of my total comp remaining effectively the same, while affordability was getting worse and worse, especially in Vancouver, one of the least affordable areas to live in the world, you kind of start thinking while you’re working on your boss’s third house, if you’re ever going to be able to buy a house, ” he remarked.

He began assessing the revenue impact of the videos he contributed to, seeking other opportunities in infrastructure IT. However, when Linus Media Group did not meet his requested salary, Tivy decided to resign.“The job market is one that’s cutthroat by its very nature, ” he stated, acknowledging the company’s decision not to comply with his request.

Beyond monetary issues, Tivy expressed concerns about evolving company culture and project workflows. He described a trend of project delegation that left him feeling increasingly disconnected from the outcomes of his work.“Combine that with the loss of team members you hope you work with forever. Things naturally getting more corporate as headcount increased, going through major controversies more than once… and slowly, the thing you signed up for changes into something completely different, ” he shared.

Before his departure, Tivy mentioned that he and other employees raised several internal issues and presented management with a list of essential changes.“I’m far from the only person who felt that way, ” he noted, adding that while some concerns were acknowledged, it didn’t sway his decision to remain.

He also expressed his reaction to a later Linus Tech Tips video that discussed company finances and included footage of former staff members. He felt upset for being included without prior consultation, particularly after his long-standing frustrations regarding compensation.“It just felt kind of backhanded, and it did make me really upset, ” he admitted, later apologizing to viewers for sharing his initial reaction publicly, indicating he should have reflected longer before voicing his opinions.

Despite his criticisms, Tivy reiterated his gratitude for the experiences and opportunities afforded to him during his tenure at the company, pointing to significant projects, Guinness World Record attempts, and collaborations that shaped his career.“Leaving LMG was probably the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make, ” he reflected, expressing hope that conditions for current and future employees would improve.

Tivy concluded the video on a positive note, stating that leaving was, in the end, the right choice for him as he now redirects his focus towards developing his own projects and content.“I am closing this LMG chapter of my life and turning the page back to what’s coming next, ” he added.
